COVID-19 has forced many local restaurants to shift their efforts in creative ways to stay in business. From curbside pickup to now establishing parklets and outdoor dining, many businesses have adapted to accommodate customers’ needs. Court Street {61 6th Street} in Hoboken is one such restaurant. This locale has been around since the early ‘80s and has stayed open through the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, COVID-19, and plans to be around for another 40 plus years. As the years have passed, Court Street continues to be a local favorite, known not only for its award-winning wine and food, but also its five-star service. Read on to learn more about this gem in downtown Hoboken.

The Background

Court Street first opened its doors on January 24th, 1981. Jack Talbot was the original owner of the restaurant. After years of building the Court Street brand, Talbot finally decided to retire in 2015. He sold the business to a former employee, Kevin Cocca, and business partner Daniel Reder.

Kevin explains, “Dan and I worked very hard to maintain the Court Street experience and quality. So much so that there was never a public announcement of the sale of the business.” The staff, kitchen, menus, and even the wine tastings have remained the same since the beginning.

The Menu

Court Street is known for Prime Rib Mondays, Wednesday Lobsterfests, and an award-winning wine list. “As COVID turned the world and the industry on its head, we changed the business model literally overnight into a takeout and delivery restaurant, while maintaining the Court Street quality of food and reasonable prices,” Kevin explains.

Court Street has fresh seafood delivered several times a week and is also known for classics like beef burgundy, pastas, steaks and even some new world favorites. According to the many five-star Google reviews, Court Street’s brunch is arguably a local best. Complimentary fruit salad and homemade Irish soda bread are served with every brunch order.

The Vibe

Court Street has stayed true to its original charm that Jack Talbot built in the early ‘80s. Although COVID may have changed the indoor dining experience, customers can now enjoy the restaurant’s charm and excellence at its sidewalk cafe and outdoor “StrEatery” on 6th Street, after Court Street launched its first-ever outdoor dining area back on June 15th. “After a well-publicized battle with the corporate real estate giant that owns the property adjacent to us, we now offer seating in our sidewalk cafe as well as our StrEatery on 6th street,” Kevin jokes.
