Semicolon Cafe, located at 77 Hudson Street in Jersey City, is one of the best places to satisfy a coffee craving in Paulus Hook. It’s close to the waterfront, serves delicious drinks and egg sandwiches, and has laptop-free zones to encourage conversation. A plant shop called Michelle’s Green Thumb recently opened on the second floor which only enhances the vibes. Keep reading to learn all about this two-for-one space in Jersey City where patrons can shop for plants and sip a latte.

Michelle’s Green Thumb

A mother and daughter team run the shop together, which opened at the end of 2022.  Michelle – yes there’s really a Michelle behind the operation – eventually took her love for plants to South Korea where she was introduced to unique plant arrangements made with upcycled items. Back in Jersey, Michelle’s Green Thumb started as a plant passion project during the pandemic.

The shop is filled with plenty of lush houseplants but what really sets the shop apart are the unique moss paintings and planters. It’s impossible not to be charmed by the moss teddy bears and bunnies filled with succulents. The paintings are one-of-a-kind pieces made with colorful wisps of moss.

Sustainability is a big focus for Michelle and many of the planters are made from upcycled materials. One of the shop’s signature items, a succulent planter called The Cuppy, is made from a repurposed cat food can. Like everything else here, The Cuppy can only be described as cute. Each one is unique and designed to look like pandas, sharks, and other animals.

Cultivate Your Green Thumb With A Class

Michelle’s Green Thumb hosts 90-minute studio classes covering a few different techniques like moss paintings and can art planters. Prices vary based on the project and you can learn more or sign up using the contact form on the website. The classes make for a fun date night or a further exploration of horticulture.

There’s a workshop for coffee clay keychains that will show guests how to create a sustainable keychain made from upcycled coffee grounds and a can tab. There are a few of these keychains available for purchase online to get an idea of what you’d be making.

Coffee and Green Vibes

There’s so much to love about Michelle’s Green Thumb – especially its location. It has taken over the loft in Semicolon and there are even a few tables upstairs where guests can bring goods from the cafe. Semicolon’s menu is packed with coffee drinks, shaved ice, bubble tea, and tons of pastries. This spot is well-known for its egg sandwiches so don’t skip those if you’re feeling a little peckish.

Like most of Semicolon, the tables in Michelle’s Green Thumb are part of a laptop-free zone, so don’t come here expecting to get some work done. This is the place to relax or catch up with a friend.

Plan to Pop In

Michelle’s Green Thumb is conveniently located on the second floor of Semicolon Cafe in Jersey City at 77 Hudson Street. There’s no signage outside for the plant shop, so it could be easy to miss. There is a sign on the door of Semicolon for Michelle’s Green Thumb. Step inside, follow the plants up the stairs, and you’ll be surrounded by greenery.
