Brick Lane Curry House has officially opened in Downtown Jersey City. After being in business for 18 years and after numerous attempts to open a new location in Jersey City, the Curry House has opened at 136 Newark Avenue {where the Pasta e Vino restaurant used to be}. There are two locations already on 6th Street in New York City and in Upper Montclair.

One of the two owners, Satinder Sharma, talked to Hoboken Girl exclusively about how he and co-owner Ajit Bains, nailed down the third location in Jersey City.

“This is something that actually came up quite unexpectedly. Someone known to us gave us a call that ‘we have this place that is available in downtown Jersey City.’ It was probably not the best time to get into something new but it so happened that both me and Ajit were Jersey City residents for a very long time,” Sharma told Hoboken Girl. “We did try doing one in Jersey City downtown a few times over the past 17/18 years that we’ve been in business but nothing materialized…It was an unexpected opportunity that just came up that was quite good, quite favorable so we just took it.”

Brick Lane has been offering delivery service since June from the owners’ other Indian restaurant, Paratha Junction, and so far, Sharma admits they have had “a good response.” The menu has been the same for the past 18 years Brick Lane has been in business because as the co-owner put it, “We have like a cult following – people keep coming back for the same food.” However, the Jersey City location will be geared more towards those who want to dine in rather than takeout.

“We’re trying to add a different menu this time – something to do more with this specific location. It reminds me of the places where you have energy like Barcelona or Madrid. And the demographic is younger people sitting out enjoying their beer or drink,” Sharma stated. “I’m a bit of a believer of being deep-rooted. There’s so much more the Indian subculture can offer, which has so much European influence…I’m working on something that’s a little unusual but it’ll be a bit more appealing to a lot of people.”

The menu consists of their signature curry offerings which vary from mild to very spicy. There are also plenty of rice and bread dishes, and vegetarian and vegan options. There will also be a full bar with Brick Lane’s signature cocktail offerings {mojitos, margaritas, martinis}, and wines and beers.

Jersey City residents and visitors can expect the unexpected at the new Jersey City location. The London-style Indian restaurant will be “more mainstream” and a “decent, nice, clean, good restaurant.”

Sharma shared, “Indian restaurants are quite stereotyped…This one will have a relatively different look. If you go to an Indian restaurant now in Central London – the kind of feel that you would get there – is something we’re trying to replicate.”

Brick Lane Curry House’s kitchen has recently had a soft opening. The co-owner mentioned, “Now we just need to fix all the kinks and put everything else in order for a formal opening party in the near future.” There will be delivery service all day, dine-in in the evening to start, and down the road – brunches on the weekends.
