    The Atmosphere

True to its name, upon entering the café you will find that it is dotted with adorable beechwood accents, including wooden tables topped with marble slabs, counter seats lining large picture windows that look out onto Grove, and hurricane vases filled with pinecones + beechwood logs {+ clearly Pinterest-worthy}. Beechwood is also always bustling, so while you may need to wait a little bit for a seat, it’s well worth it.

    Food

First things first: brunch — paired with an ah-mazing iced coffee. With notes of vanilla and a strong {but not too strong} bitterness, this caffeinated bev is quite refreshing. If you’re looking to add a little hair of ze dog with your brunch, keep in mind that Beechwood is BYO, so make sure to pick up a bottle of champs beforehand. The brunch menu, served until 4:00PM on the weekends, features all of the classics including pancakes {cornmeal and regular}, French toast and omelets, as well as some stellar breakfast sandwiches.

Do yourself a favor and check out the ELAT: fried egg, lettuce, avocado and tomato on challah bread {YUM} or choose from the many varieties of eggs benedict {vegetarians, there’s even a fried tofu benedict}. The brunch plates are not to be missed either: from the huevos rancheros to the pan-chicken plate, which includes two pieces of fried chicken with pancakes and jalapeno green mayo. Yes, for real.

We dug into the green chili burrito and the chilies Quiles, with some tasty breakfast meats on the side. The burrito, which contains egg, green chilies, cheddar cheese and home fries, is simply scrumptious, wrapped perfectly so that every bite is evenly proportioned {not always an easy feat}. The chilies Quiles are served in a giant bowl filled with green salsa goodness and perfectly poached eggs {which is srsly a skill} along with mozzarella, pico de gallo, sour cream, and, of course, corn chips that soften to the perfect consistency when soaked in all of the toppings. Add to that thick-cut, crispy bacon and maple-flavored sausage, and you’ve got a super filling brunch that will hold you over til dinner {they serve that too, btw}.

Beechwood also offers a dinner menu which is served weeknights from 4-9:30PM and includes burgers, sandwiches and entrée bowls, including the tofu hot stone bowl, or the penne pasta with pesto or vodka sauce. Don’t forget to stop at the bakery case in the front of the café on your way out, which is filled with fresh baked goods including cupcakes, pies {strawberry peach, apple, pecan or pumpkin}, chocolate mousse, matcha cheesecake, and more.

Not to be outdone, Beechwood also has a newly opened location on 18 Park Ave conveniently titled B18, which is near the Marin Boulevard light rail stop and features all of your bakery case favorites, a coffee bar, breakfast sandwiches and omelets. Lunch and dinner include a large variety of burgers AND a sizeable selection of “tacorean” bowls, featuring the bulgogi bowl, bibim bowl, or a selection of quesadillas -so get over there and get to eating!

Lauren originally hails from Nutley, NJ but is happy and proud to have called Bayonne her hometown for the past 5 years, where she can always find a beautiful park to walk or run in and a great place to eat. Lauren has a deep appreciation for a good bar, a great glass of red wine, and good food, and often frequents Jersey City for dining, where she worked for 4 years. Now working in NYC, Lauren still gets her Jersey City fix on the weekends or after work, and then goes back to her apartment where she lives with her husband, a Bayonne native, and her awesome kitty, Lola. You can also find her at yoga class in Jersey City or Hoboken, writing, or reading {and continually running out of space for all of her books} in her spare time.
