The Closure

On Tuesday, August 27th, Amelia’s Bistro announced its closure via Instagram, citing economic hardships as the reason for the sudden closure:

Our Dear Friends + Neighbors,

It is with the heaviest and saddest hearts that we must close our doors today, Tuesday, August 27th, 2024.

For the past 20 years, we have served this amazing & remarkable community. We are so thankful and blessed to have gotten the chance to know every single one of you, and all of you have become a part of our family. We loved bringing food, joy, and comfort to downtown Jersey City and seeing your beautiful and smiling faces every day. Unfortunately, we have been faced with the most difficult economic hardships, and we are unable to move forward and stay a part of this lovely community. We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for keeping us alive and a part of your hearts for these past twenty years. Thank you for your continuous love & support, and it breaks our hearts that we have to say goodbye.

About Amelia’s Bistro

Owned by Frank Mandaro and named after his mother, the interior of Amelia’s featured fun artwork, a granite-top bar (complete with a large overhead wine rack), and cozy tables of four providing a relaxed vibe, with a basement for larger parties as well as a few outdoor tables. One visit to Amelia’s and it was clear that the diner would never go hungry — there were tons of options available, as well as many gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian choices on the menu.

Small plates and appetizers on the menu included oysters, Waygu beef crostini, ginger mango-glazed chicken, and calamari, among other options representing a variety of cuisines.

The dinner and drinks menu had an assortment of sliders and sandwiches, including Amelia’s original Kobe beef sliders, the classic bistro burger, and the crispy chicken sandwich. Entrée plates included various types of pasta, grilled Japanese eggplant, farm-raised Amish chicken, Chilean sea bass, and other dishes.

Pairing that with the hefty wine list and a creative cocktail menu made for a pretty tasty night out in Paulus Hook. Not to be forgotten was the dessert menu — options ranged from Amelia’s flan to a campfire s’mores flatbread.

Weekend brunch was also a must at Amelia’s and was definitely the most popular time to go. The brunch menu was complete with pancakes, avocado toast, a variety of eggs benedicts, and several omelets to choose from. Breakfast burritos, brunch burgers, and fried chicken + waffles also topped the list, with $5 mimosas, bellinis, champagne, or Bloody Marys available. For something stronger, beer cocktails and “brunch-tails” were also available.
