On Wednesday, July 1st, two people were reported to be climbing the spire of the Empire State Building. The two are carrying a banner that reads, “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.” It’s unknown whether the two are part of a larger organization or acting on their own. The pair appeared to be a man and woman, both of whom were wearing masks.
According to NBC4NY, the two were observed at 12 noon, and were climbing down by 12:40PM. One of the climbers was spotted proposing to the other, and they were later spotted kissing and embracing. The observation deck was cleared of spectators, and the two climbers were taken into custody, according to CBS News.
The Empire State Building is 1,250 feet tall, and is 1,454 feet tall including the spire and antenna, according to the Empire State Building.
As of 1:30PM, NBC News reported that the two were identified as Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, two Russian nationals who were also behind the documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, which followed the couple as they coordinated similar stunts on skyscrapers.
