The weather pattern that became Winter Storm Fern made its way up the East Coast on Sunday and Monday, January 25th and 26th, 2026. Many North Jersey towns reported several inches of snow and ice, with some counties reporting close to 20” of snowfall. The snow has stopped, but the impact remains, as many schools are closed or delayed, and many transit systems are operating on reduced schedules. Now, forecasters have announced the possibility of another snow event next weekend, January 31st and February 1st, 2026. Winter Storm Fern
Winter Storm Fern made its way across the United States, impacting residents in the Midwest and South before making its way to the East Coast. Snowfall began late on Saturday night, January 24th, and continued throughout the day on Sunday, January 25th, before switching to ice on January 26th.
The storm was superlative in many ways: it caused the most flight cancellations since 2020; it was one of Boston’s top 10 snowiest days; and it was the snowiest day on record in Toronto. Cold temperatures reached all the way to the Gulf Coast, and hundreds of thousands of residents nationwide are without power as ice on power lines has impacted the power supply. Bergen and Morris Counties reported 17” of snow, while Hoboken reported 9.5”.

Here in Hudson County, many local schools were closed on Monday, January 26th, and had delayed openings on Tuesday, January 27th. While neighbors dig out, nearly all local transit systems have modified schedules to account for the weather. Perhaps most notably, the NYC Ferry: ice on the Hudson River is impeding the boats’ ability to travel.
What’s Next
As of Tuesday, January 27th, forecasters are keeping an eye on another system for next weekend. “Forecasts are being monitored for increasing potential of another significant winter storm to impact the eastern United States this coming weekend,” per the National Weather Service.
Forecasters with the Weather Channel described being certain of the time, location, and intensity of the upcoming storm, but less certain about impacts and snowfall. “As often is the case, several days away from the storm, some aspects are of higher confidence, and some are still very unclear,” they write. The team describes an intense storm that will work its way up the East Coast, from South Carolina to Maine, over the weekend beginning Friday night, January 30th .
