When you’re on the hunt for an Italian deli or pizza spot, it’s a pretty simple walk down the block to find one — regardless of your location in Hudson County. But when it comes to dairy-free, vegan fare, it’s not as easy. Lucky for us, Subia’s Organic Cafe, is a small, family-owned vegan restaurant located in the heart of downtown Jersey City serving some of the best vegan food in Hudson County — let alone Jersey City — since 2003. Vegans and non-vegans alike flock here from all over the tri-state area to try Subia’s famous home cooked dishes. Here’s a bit more about this Jersey City spot, located at 506 Jersey Avenue in JC, that serves vegan comfort food, desserts, and healthy {but delicious} salads and sandwiches.

Tucked away on the corner of Wayne + Jersey Avenue, Subia’s Cafe could easily be missed — but that would be a travesty. Below, we’re sharing some of our favorite #eeeeeats from this vegan locale.

Breakfast + Brunch

Vegan french toast never looked so good.

Hobbs Inc

Just like your favorite Jersey diner, Subia’s has vegan brunch available all day errrrday! The Breakfast Wrap and the Southern Biscuit Sausage Melt are closely tied for first place favorite — but the French Toast is nothing to be scoffed at, either.

Subia’s Original Breakfast Platter offers up the standard vegan-style American breakfast complete with griddled seitan sausage, seasoned veggie tofu scramble, breakfast home fries, lightly sautéed veggies and hickory smoked tempeh bacon served with toast and butter. It’s a party in yo mouth, sans meat.

Zucchini Cheeze stix breaded with organic cornmeal — served with cool and spicy dip. SPECIAL for sure.

While the menu is extensive, there is always a soup du jour and other specials on the chalkboard. Specials have included: spaghetti squash and mushroom walnut meatballs, a baby kale salad with bacon tempeh, smoked gouda, candied walnuts and a lemon dijon vinaigrette, BBQ cauliflower steak, and kimchi tacos.

Sandwiches and Salads

Popular sandwiches include the Tuna V-Melt, Zen Garden, Philly Cheeze, Spicy Buffalo Strips, and Italian Sausage & Peppers. There are also three signature burgers, all of which are garnished generously with beautiful sunflower sprouts and veggies. If you’re eating on the lighter and healthier side, the Raw Salad is highly recommended as it comes chock full of mixed greens, sunflower sprouts, walnuts, carrots, onions and spicy kimchi. You’ll have a hard time finishing this hearty salad in one sitting.

For Your Sweet Tooth

This cannoli is VEGAN. That’s correct.

Dessert is not taken lightly at this vegan cafe! Most of the desserts are outsourced from world-famous vegan bakery, Vegan Treats in Bethlehem PA. You will find Oreo and carrot cake cupcakes, cheesecake, strawberry shortcake, cannolis {above}, cookies, peanut butter brownies, donuts and cheese danishes. Local vegan chef, Tere Fox of Rockin’ Raw also provides delicious gluten-free cakes and cupcakes at Subia’s.

Juices Galore

Subia’s opens early for those looking to grab a healthy organic vegetable juice or smoothie {or danish, #nojudgment} before work. With names like “Keep the Dr. Away” {carrot, apple, lemon, ginger}, “Healthy Liver” {parsley, ginger, beet, carrot}, “Immune Boost” {carrot, apple, celery, spinach} and “Flu Fighter” {carrot, orange, apple, lemon, cayenne, garlic}, Subia’s Juice ‘Farm’acy has your juice fix.

Subia’s will soon be expanding their menu to include more dinner items as they plan on closing later in the near future. Please note: Subia’s is closed on Mondays and the kitchen is closed from 3:30 – 4:45PM on weekdays. Delivery is available on FastBoy Delivery. But you’ll want to come in to enjoy your food – they have free wifi, a cozy vibe, and it’s right down the block from a bunch of other Jersey City fun.

Have you been to Subia’s? What did you think?
