• Union Hall: Spacious Hoboken Waterfront Bar

Whether you’re feeling disco fries and a craft beer after work, a crisp, classic cocktail and raw bar for date night, or a fun night out with friends listening to tunes from a live DJ, Union Hall has got you covered. This funky, spacious gastropub brings a lot to the table, as this isn’t its owners’ first rodeo {no pun intended — they also own Stewed Cow and Brass Rail}. Check out what we love about this waterfront bar:

When it comes to ambiance, Union Hall has an elevated, gastropub vibe with some industrial touches like exposed beams and concrete columns, a departure from Trinity, its predecessor in the location. Even the waitstaff, uniformed in jeans, gingham button-ups and converse add to the collective eclectic feel.

Now, onto the important stuff — the food. But here’s the deal: Union Hall doesn’t quite do main course meals. Instead, they offer about 40 small plates, which is perfect since you’ll most likely want to try a bunch of things. The menu features creative American cuisine that is enhanced with flavors from around the world like the miso ginger salmon, or cauliflower “fried rice” below {soooo good}. While there is a wide variety of items on the menu, there is one obvious ingredient in each dish: the attention to creative detail. As executive chef, Matt Arlington, will tell you, “This is not your average ‘drop it in the fryer’ joint.” It’s clear he and his partners have worked hard to develop a whole menu they are proud of, and when asked for his favorite dish, he was particularly excited about the Big Mack Beef Tartar.

And don’t think we forgot about the bar, which has as diverse an array of options as their food menu. With 50 wines by the bottle and an additional 25 by the glass {+ a sommelier or two to help get your vino picks perfect}, there’s plenty to chose from. Prefer beer? Union Hall has created their very own “Union Brew” ale, or you can select something from their page-long beer list. They also offer both classic and house cocktails, like The Delegate — which we are very into {ingredients include Patron Silver, Solerno, honey, OJ, and red wine float… YUM}.

And if you’re trying to turn your sit-down dinner into some late-night fun, they have a live DJ on Friday and Saturday nights. Arlington wanted to create a place where people could hang out after hours post-dinner, and get something good to eat that’s not fast-food. It’s safe to say he succeeded.
