The statement went on to say that a new venture would take over the space, led by current Food Network star, Chef Cliff Crooks, and the team that operates two other local favorites, Johnny Pepperoni’s and City Bistro. “We’re excited to share that a new concept will be opening later in 2025 at this location. The new owners, who also proudly operate City Bistro and Johnny Pepperoni in collaboration with Chef Cliff Crooks, are planning something special to continue the tradition of great food and community in Hoboken.”

The Plans, Previously

John Avoletta shared plans for the future of the restaurant back in the fall 2023 exclusively with The Hoboken Girl. At the time, the plans were for a more upscale spot. The upcoming changes promised an innovative concept, stepping away from the typical sports bar environment.

The Stewed Cow

“The Stewed Cow will be transformed into a new and interesting concept, something that is not being done in the city. No TVs – [it will be] food forward,” John had said at the time. He was working with Risclas Agnese, a Manhattan-based design firm, to craft his vision for the space.

John highlighted the revamp of The Stewed Cow’s menu, emphasizing the shift towards entirely in-house items, extending all the way to the restaurant’s meat and poultry. An expanded wine list and tequila offerings are expected to be a part of the changes.

The Future

Now, it appears that Chef Cliff Crooks will bring his spin to move the project to the location as one of the new owners. If you’re not familiar, he is the host of Chef Bootcamp on The Food Network, and now a restaurateur in Hoboken.

About The Stewed Cow

The Stewed Cow was a Hoboken favorite for just about any kind of outing. It’s happy hours, extensive Texas-inspired menu, plentiful TVs, and brunch selections drew all kinds of patrons to 400 Adams Street. The menu housed southern-inspired braised roast pork and tacos, served with homemade tortillas, and of course, before its makeover, had a mechanical bull in the back, keeping patrons coming back. And for the OGs, it was known as “Gaslight” — and had a $15 brunch including two mimosas (iykyk).
