The team of teachers are gentle and patient and the programs are designed to be fun. On day one, children are taught to float independently without floaties — so students can develop water safety skills without relying on assistance.

This unique approach means that students learn unparalleled water safety and survival skills. The British Swim School even hosts “Survival Week” so children learn how to swim with their clothes on so they can be ready for a real-life accident.

“Feeling that we do something good for the community by keeping kids safe,” is the best part of running the business, Robert Stapf of the British Swim School told The Hoboken Girl.

Programs and Lessons Available

Water safety and swim lessons are available for everyone ages 3 months to adults. The British Swim School’s time-tested programs are taught by expert instructors who complete 60+ hours of in-house training.

Classes are small and students get plenty of individualized attention. Beginning classes start with no more than four students to one teacher.

The programs are structured and goal-oriented and students only graduate from one program to the next when they are ready. Programs at the British Swim School include:

Tadpole (3-36 months with parent): This water acclimation class is designed to get infants and toddlers comfortable with the water.

Swimboree (3-36 months with parent): This class focuses on the basics of water survival skills through songs and games.

Seahorse (18-36 months): Parents sit on the pool deck while the swimmers learn advanced water survival skills.

Starfish (3+): Swimmers continue to get comfortable in the water and learn how to float on their backs on their own.

Minnow (3+): This basic water safety class is in a small group setting with no more than 4 participants.

Turtle 1 (3+): Children learn advanced water survival skills in this small group of no more than 4 swimmers.

Turtle 2 (3+): This class teaches students the basic techniques for three strokes.

Shark 1 (3+): Students build on what they learned in Turtle 2 and now perfect the advanced techniques for four strokes.

Shark 2 (3+): Kids who love to swim will learn basic drills so they can join a swim team in the future.

Barracudas: Strong swimmers are coached on their individual styles so they can swim with more stamina and speed.

Young Adult (12+): This class is perfect for young adults who want to build confidence and water safety skills.

Adult: Personalized lessons are developed to meet each adult’s water safety needs.

Dolphin 1: Water acclimation classes that are adapted for children with special abilities, who cannot join group classes yet.

Dolphin 2: Water safety skills that are adapted for children with special abilities, who cannot join group classes yet.

How The British Swim School Got Started

Rita Goldberg, a former English national swimmer, founded the British Swim School in 1981. She had recently moved to Florida and was shocked to learn that most kids didn’t take swim lessons until they turned five, even though childhood drowning victims were often younger.

Rita created a unique and highly effective method that helps children as young as 3 months old learn to fall in the water and float on their backs. The British Swim School took off and has expanded over the past 42 years to more than 300 locations in the US and Canada.

The British Swim School’s mission is to help everyone, regardless of their age or ability, to become a confident, safe, and happy swimmer.
