October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and is a cause that affects so many people across the world. In New Jersey, it has inspired the very opening of Serenity Wig Design, a sanctuary for women to create a beautiful look with high-quality wigs and custom services. Read on to learn about Susan Lupo, breast cancer survivor and founder of Serenity Wig Design, located within Vitalife’s Beauty Outlet at 461 US-46 in Fairfield, New Jersey.

About Serenity Wig Design

After 40 years in the salon business, a New Jersey resident, and breast cancer survivor Susan Lupo decided to pursue her dream of designing a sanctuary for women that want to create new and beautiful looks with high-quality wigs. Despite living in the middle of a global pandemic and never having opened a business prior, Susan researched, quickly obtained an LLC, organized a high-quality inventory of wigs from HairUWear, and set up shop, all on her own, even painting the walls of her new shop herself.

“Fourteen years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and with the support of my amazing family and my faith, I got through it. Throughout my journey, I always knew I had to give back, contribute, and make an impact somehow. This year I opened Serenity Wig Design with the hope that my time had come to touch the lives of others, to inspire, and to share. I believe that every day is a fresh start, a new beginning and that this is what I am meant to do. I hope to be successful in a way that is measured by how many people are better off because I’ve helped them,” Susan told Hoboken Girl.

“Diving into my hairdressing career at age 18, I began to see the beauty of helping someone transform their look with a cut, color, or blowout. It was always about more than just the look. There was nothing quite like seeing a woman step out of my chair with a confident smile, ready to take on the world,” says Susan.

But running the businesses would require a team effort, and Susan looked no further than her daughter, Michelle Lupo, a Hoboken resident who is versed in sales and design. Michelle is Serenity Wig Design’s web designer, social media manager, and brand strategist, capturing the vibe and culture of the business.

“A hairstyle has the power to transform and tell a story, and we want to create a space for ALL women to do just that,” Susan shared. “Whether you are looking to change your style, have gone through chemo, have alopecia, are transitioning, or simply want to change up your look, we would like to be part of your journey.”

The Design of the Shop

With a mission to empower people by helping them not only look beautiful but feel beautiful as well, Susan intentionally constructed the wig salon with warm colors and accents, including a coffee and tea station and cozy seating. Many women find the prospect of starting over with a new wig daunting, so every detail of the space was created with customer comfort in mind.

The Wigs & Services

Susan provides high-quality wigs with full service, including custom fittings, styling, and maintenance in the comfort of her peaceful and private space.

Having only been open a few months, she has already impacted many lives with her empathetic approach to wig selection and styling.

Susan shared the things that inspire her to keep the shop running, “A recent customer told me, ‘In looking for wig options prior to my upcoming chemo, it was so comforting and understanding to have someone who truly understood my needs and concerns.’ She was so relaxed in my care that day, and we both finished our session feeling so much happier.”

Susan’s shop is doing more than supply women with beautiful wigs, as a breast cancer survivor herself, it’s about connecting with the customers and providing comfort and happiness to those who are going through a change in their lives, as Susan once did.
