The Hoboken Girl team is partnering up with The Flow Initiative to combat period poverty in Hudson County and is hosting a Supplies Collection Happy Hour at The Waiting Room in Hoboken on Tuesday, October 15th from 6PM to 8:30PM. Located at 72 Hudson Street in Hoboken, The Waiting Room and our team will be present with The Flow Initiative to raise awareness and enjoy a night to collect period supplies.
After successful drives annually for the last four years in collaboration with our team — that collected over 30,000 supplies each year for locals in need of period supplies — The Local Girl and The Flow Initiative have set a lofty goal for 2024 to raise at least 40,000 supplies.

Make sure to stop by to meet The Hoboken Girl team, make some new friends, and give back to The Flow Initiative’s amazing cause at our Happy Hour @ The Waiting Room in Hoboken (72 Hudson Street) from 6PM to 8:30PM on Tuesday, October 15th, 2024.
On the menu for happy hour: there’s an espresso martini flight with 4 different flavors including a PB espresso martini, a pumpkin-spiced espresso martini, a cinnamon espresso martini, and a regular espresso martini. You can try any and all, and bring friends. The Waiting Room will also be donating a portion of the happy hour’s sales to The Flow Initiative to further amplify the cause.
Stop by anytime between 6PM-8:30PM on Tuesday, October 15th, and don’t forget to bring supplies as your ‘entry!’

Starting Tuesday, October 8th through Tuesday, October 22nd, the local businesses below will accept needed items during business hours. Those interested can bring new boxes of pads, tampons, panty liners, individually wrapped feminine wipes, and menstruation relief pads to any location. The Flow Initiative will collect and disperse where needed. More on the drop-off locations and hours as you read on. But stop by the Happy Hour event any time 6PM-8:30PM on Tuesday, October 15th to hang with our team and sip some new cocktails.

The Need in the Community
Too often period poverty is discussed as a global issue with the idea that menstruating bodies in underdeveloped countries face a lack of access to supplies more often than in the U.S. While the global numbers are high, 20% of menstruating students in this country are forced to miss school or experience an accident during the day.
Hudson County is home to some of the highest numbers of students facing period poverty in the country. This not only affects overall menstrual hygiene, but can lead to poor education outcomes, missed work, and mental health issues.
Founder of The Flow Initiative, Eiko La Boria, shared that students who have benefitted from previous drives have said that school is much easier, and they feel more confident when access to supplies is not a worry. In 2023, our partnership was able to donate thousands of period supplies to menstruating persons throughout the county. We hope to exceed that number this year.
“With menstrual health products rising in costs nationwide, it’s imperative to raise awareness of period poverty and we are so proud to work with The Hoboken Girl,” said Sabrina Browne, Partner of The Flow Initiative. “For the last five years, the team has been instrumental in helping us reach women, girls, and all who menstruate.”
On The Flow Initiative
The stats surrounding period poverty and access to supplies were striking to Jersey City resident Eiko La Boria prompting her into action and to found The Flow Initiative.
Just in Jersey City, 90% of menstruating bodies have a need for supplies while in school, 76% have had an accident, and 20% have missed school completely. Upon learning this, Eiko made it her mission to get these products into the hands of those in need while also erasing the stigma and shame often associated with periods.
Over the years, she has advocated for menstrual equity in the city and county at large while creating an access plan to start getting period product dispensaries and opening emergency period product distribution centers throughout the City. Her work is necessary for the community, and she hopes to take this mission nationwide.
“I am so grateful for the support, generosity, and elevation of our mission that Jen, Jordan, Joelle, the entire Hoboken Girl Team, participating businesses, and the great people of Hoboken and Jersey City have bestowed on The Flow Initiative,” Eiko said. “Without question, this menstrual product drive, now in its fifth year, has raised awareness, mobilized the movement to end period poverty, and created a call to action that has echoed all the way down to Trenton and across the country.”

There’s a Chicken Wing Contest for Charity Coming to Hoboken on 2/1
After a five-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Hoboken's chicken wing contest is making a return in 2025. Hosted by St. Francis Church and benefitting Fr. Michael Food Pantry, 11 restaurants from around the Mile Square (and one in Jersey City) will compete for the title of "King of Wings." The event will take place on Saturday, February 1st from 6PM-10PM at the Hoboken Elks Club, located at 1005 Washington Street. Event Details
A Wing + A Prayer — a popular Hoboken event that was last held in February of 2020 — will make its return to the Mile Square on Saturday, February 1st, 2025, with proceeds benefiting the Fr. Michael Food Pantry at St. Francis Church. Per a press release, the event will be held from 6PM to 10PM at the Hoboken Elks Club, located at 1005 Washington Street.

So, how does the event work? Eleven restaurants from around Hoboken and Jersey City will be showcasing their chicken wings in a people's choice competition to crown the "best wings in Hoboken." The participating restaurants are as follows:

Those in attendance will vote for their favorite wings, and the winning restaurant gets to take home the trophy to be held at their restaurant until the next event.
The organizers shared with The Hoboken Girl that the pantry provides monthly groceries to families in need, and that the proceeds from this event will help bring back the daily sandwich program.
