About Monkeypox in Hudson County + NJ
Monkeypox was first confirmed in New Jersey on June 20th, and Hudson has since become the county with the most cases in the state. Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla said in an update on Sunday that there are “some” cases in Hoboken — according to Patch — but the official number has not yet been released. As of August 9th, New Jersey has a total of 264 probable and confirmed cases, Hudson County has 77 cases, and Essex County has the second most in the state with 54.
This disease is also known as orthopox and presents in most patients as flu-like symptoms, including lethargy, fever, headache, rash, and lesions. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Monkeypox is a zoonotic (spreads from animals to humans) virus endemic to west and central African nations. Symptoms last two to four weeks and most symptoms resolve on their own — with the symptoms appearing between 7 and 20 days after exposure.
