Earlier this month, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) formally announced that MetroCard sales and distribution will officially halt on December 31st, 2025. The physical cards will be replaced by a contactless tap-and-go system, which allows travelers to pay and enter transit seamlessly in one place. Over 450 New York City subway stations will be updated by the fall with One Metro New York (OMNY) machines. (For customers who prefer physical cards or need to pay with cash, OMNY cards will be available for purchase for $1.)

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber shared via press release that “Tap-and-go – already the choice for 65% of our riders – is not only easier and more convenient to use, it also opens the door for new discounts and promotions that’ll put money back in riders’ pockets.” The goal? To create a simpler, faster, and more cost-effective system.  MTA Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara also stated via press release that tap-and-go fare payments save customers from the “guessing game on what fare package is most cost efficient for their travels and making using NYC’s transit system much easier,”.

With New York leading the charge, New Jersey will be going digital, too. The Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) will follow suit, ending the use of all MetroCards at the end of the year and implementing its form of tap-and-go system. The Total Access PATH Payment (TAPP), which originally rolled out testing in December of 2023, will replace all MetroCard and SmartLink services once machines at all stations are fully updated. TAPP is currently available at all stations but the system will continue to expand gradually station-wide to cover additional turnstiles, according to the Port Authority of NY + NJ. These tap-and-go payments are expected to eliminate long vending machine lines and keep travelers moving.

For those who do not have an electronic payment method, the MetroCard and SmartLink machines will still be available to use and will continue accepting cash until they are phased out. The Hoboken Girl has reached out to PATH to learn about alternative payment options once the transition happens and will update this piece upon receiving a response.
