Filipino street food restaurant Meryendang Pinoy, located at 283 Newark Avenue in Jersey City, is temporarily closed after a fire damaged the restaurant on Monday, February 9th. The spot opened in summer 2024 and quickly became a local favorite for downtown Jersey City. Read on for more about Meryendang Pinoy and its temporary closure.
What Happened?
According to a post shared on Instagram by the restaurant, an overnight fire on Monday, February 9th, damaged the restaurant. “There was a fire last night that is still under investigation. We’ll be closed for a while,” the post read. Several other Jersey City restaurant owners and neighbors shared in support of the Meryendang team.
Husband and wife Jhonacel and Josan Candelaria are behind the Meryendang team. Many menu items are traditional Filipino menu items like fish balls, Filipino hot dogs, and halo-halo. There is also a daily special. The team also offers catering, which has a live cooking option.
According to a GoFundMe posted on behalf of the restaurant, walls had to be broken down to fight the fire, and the HVAC system was damaged. We reached out to their team directly, and they shared that they are grateful for the support they’ve received from the community during this difficult time and thankful for the love shown during these challenging moments.
