Akihi Bubble Tea Opens in Hoboken

Akihi Bubble Tea, a bubble tea chain with five other New Jersey locations, opened its doors to Hoboken customers at 219 Washington Street on October 3rd. The business rewarded early birds by handing out 200 free drinks to the first to arrive on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Click here for more.


Automated Camera Enforcement in Effect on Hoboken’s Washington Street

The City of Hoboken launched a Vision Zero initiative using cameras to automate enforcement of traffic violations. Per a press release from the city, the program focuses on illegal parking along Washington Street from Observer Highway to Eighth Street, and went into effect on October 1st, 2025. A “pop-up education event” about the program was held for residents on Monday September, 29th from 3PM-6PM. Click here for more.

A Hoboken trainer is joining forces with two other local instructors to bring a new pilates spot to the Mile Square. Back in April, The Hoboken Girl first reported on mystery signage at 113 14th Street in Hoboken, and confirmed that the space will be the home of TZR Studio. Antique At 112 is Open Again

Antique At 112 has reopened in Hoboken. The relaunch took place on Saturday, October 4th at 9AM with an all-vinyl DJ set and big flavors made from scratch. Tables can be reserved via Resy.


Man Dies in PATH Train Accident in Jersey City

A person was struck and killed by a PATH train in Jersey City on the morning of September 30th, per the Jersey City Times. The victim was struck just after 10:30AM at the Journal Square station. A spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey identified the victim as a 64-year-old homeless man. The spokesperson directed further questions to the Hudson County Medical Examiner, confirming earlier reports that the victim had died in the incident.


New Jersey Devils Kick Off New Roller Hockey Program in Hoboken

A new youth ball hockey program hosted by the New Jersey Devils kicked off in Hoboken this week. On Wednesday, October 1st, 2025, the Devils and the City of Hoboken officially commenced their youth ball hockey program, including a brief ceremony before the first clinic featuring special guests. Back in the spring of 2024, a partnership was formalized between the City of Hoboken and the National Hockey League’s (NHL) New Jersey Devils. The Devils have since contributed upwards of $200,000 to renovate Hoboken’s Multi-Service Center Roller Rink at 124 Grand Street, and the rink opened to locals in October 2024. Click here for more.


Hoboken Unveils a New Mural at Resiliency Park

Passers-by near 7th and Jackson Resiliency Park over the past few months have noticed the coming together of a vibrant mural. The mural was designed under the direction of the City of Hoboken’s Division of Cultural Affairs. Local muralist Emily Strauss designed and painted the mural, which features local scenes and Hoboken residents. A ribbon-cutting was held on Monday, September 29th to celebrate the new mural and its subjects, the residents of Hoboken. Click here for more.

Jersey City’s Kitchen Step restaurant, located at 500 Jersey Avenue, has announced its closure. The restaurant opened in 2016 and was best known for its creative cocktails and fun takes on classic American dishes. A popular New Jersey-based Mexican restaurant has announced its arrival in Jersey City. Planting roots at 25 Christopher Columbus Drive, Meximodo Cocina Mexicana + Tequila Bar, a trendy Mexican eatery and bar, will open in the downtown area on October 9th. Heights University Hospital in Jersey City to Suspend Non-Essential Services 

Heights University Hospital in Jersey City will suspend non-essential services in the next 30 days, barring “substantial financial support” from the state. Per the Jersey City Times, Health Professional and Allied Employees (HPAE), said some of its members at Heights University Hospital received layoff notices last week. State lawmakers are planning to introduce legislation that would keep Heights University Hospital open until the end of the year. State Sen. Raj Mukherji (District 32) took to Instagram to announce that he and State Sen. Brian Stack (District 33) will cosponsor a supplemental appropriation of $15-$25 million to keep Heights University Hospital open through the remainder of 2025.

A group of five local creatives (and friends) is bringing a totally new concept to Hoboken. The new endeavor which will house multiple forms of niche-entertainment, is fittingly called Mothership. The Hoboken Girl received a DM from the new store owners earlier this year with the inside scoop, telling us all about Mothership, which will be a community art store with pop culture swag, vinyl, a vintage arcade, and so much more (trust us, keep reading) coming soon to 257 1st Street in Hoboken. The space will house a variety of entertainment-related fun that is anticipated to be a big hit with local gamers, students, and creatives. Proposal for Food Hall + Hotel Advances for Former Pompidou Site in Jersey City

The Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, JCRA, has made new progress in the previously stalled redevelopment plans for the historic Pathside Building located at 84 Sip Avenue. Also known as 25 Journal Square, the building was purchased by the City in 2018 with the original intention of being converted into a museum and community center. Plans then evolved, and eventually fell through, for the site to be the first American location of the Pompidou, a Paris-based international art museum. As of September 16th, 2025, the JCRA approved a new conditional redeveloper for the property. Click here for more.


NJ Transit Bus Catches on Fire On Turnpike In Secaucus

An NJ Transit bus caught on fire and became engulfed in flames on the morning of October 2nd on the New Jersey Turnpike in Secaucus. Per Patch Hoboken, the bus caught fire at 6:12AM near the approach to exit 15X. The bus had departed Plainfield at 5:06AM and was scheduled to arrive at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. It experienced a tire blowout, resulting in a fire. Local Secaucus firefighters put out the fire. The 49 passengers on the bus and the driver were safely evacuated. There were no injuries.

The Hoboken Police Department HPD is investigating two reports over the last few days, in which an individual impersonating a fire inspector entered local businesses and requested money for new fire extinguishers, which were not provided. The individual, believed to be in his 50’s, was wearing all black. Hoboken Fire inspectors will always be in full uniform. The City of Hoboken urges community members to contact the Hoboken Fire Department to verify any Fire Inspector ID at (201) 420-2004. Please also report the incident to the Hoboken Police Department at 201-420-2100.

The first-ever Hoboken Pup Crawl is happening on Sunday, October 19th from 11AM–4PM. The starting location will be The Ale House at 1034 Willow Avenue. Then participants can enjoy a self-guided stroll using a guide filled with stops at Hoboken’s most dog-friendly bars including Tally Ho, Louise and Jerry’s Tavern, Schmittys, and The Shannon. Expect drinks specials, giveaways and dog vendors at each stop. Registration is available now exclusively at Corner Stone Pets located at 105 9th Street. Tickets are $35 in advance at Corner Stone Pets and $40 on the day of at The Ale House. All pups are free.


Jersey City Police Investigate Fatal Shooting in Jersey City

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on September 28th. Per a Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office press release, shortly after 5AM, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of shots fired in the area of Union Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Responding officers located a male – later identified as Jamaal George, 27, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 5:30AM. No arrests have been made at this time. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor at 201-915-1345 or to leave an anonymous tip here.


Maxwell Coffee Changes Name From ‘House’ to ‘Apartment,’ For Now

Hoboken-born coffee brand, Maxwell House, will be changing its name to Maxwell Apartment. Parent company Kraft Heinz announced the change on September 25th, launching a limited-time rebrand. The coffee brand is celebrating 133 years of business, and is launching the “apartment” coffee as a way to help customers in light of rising costs of living, especially in housing. Refrigerators and freezer units at Hoboken Trader Joe’s were down on Monday, September 29th. Crews were seen working throughout the day and night to get everything repaired and refilled. A Trader Joe’s employee confirmed that the freezers were back up and running on the morning of Tuesday, September 30th.


Jersey City WIC Launches New Satellite Clinic to Expand Healthcare Access

The Jersey City Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program announced the launch of a new satellite clinic in partnership with Metropolitan Family Health Network (MFHN) at 935 Garfield Avenue. Per a City of Jersey City press release, as of October 2nd the clinic operates every Thursday from 9AM-12PM, expanding access to critical nutrition and support services for Jersey City families.


Jersey City Redevelopment Agency to Vote on $40 Million Loan for Pompidou X

Construction of the Centre Pompidou x Jersey City could now be fueled by a $40 million loan from the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency (JCRA) and potentially $75 million in tax credits from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. But according to the Jersey City Times, the JCRA Board of Commissioners was a no show when it came time to vote on the proposed $40 million bridge loan on October 3rd. The special meeting has been postponed due to a lack of quorum.


22-Story Development Moves Forward in Hoboken

The revitalization of Hoboken’s northwestern edge recently took another step forward as preliminary approval was given to a modified plan that would bring more residential development to a property near the 14th Street Viaduct. Per Jersey Digs, Hoboken’s City Council voted unanimously to approve a second amended and restated redevelopment agreement with Just Block 112 LLC on September 17th. 30 affordable housing units would be included in the development, which is slated to top out at 22 stories with a smaller five-story section on the southern portion of the lot.

Jersey City’s Franklin School has won the World’s Most Innovative School prize by T4 Education. This global competition had over 1000 applicants from all over the world. Franklin’s recognition as the world’s most innovative school highlights its innovative learning methods that integrate technology and design in a state-of-the-art Fab Lab with personalised experiences to develop real-world readiness and empower learners as complex problem solvers.

On October 4th from 11AM-3PM, the Hoboken Public Library hosted its first-ever Repair Café in the Large Programming Room at the Main Library. The event was part of a global movement that encourages sustainability by giving everyday items a second life. Sponsored by the Youth Climate Action Grant of Hoboken and led by the Library’s Teen Advisory Board in partnership with Girl Scout Troop 10309, the Repair Café was created to share skills, make repairs, and keep items out of landfills.
