In case you missed it, The Hoboken Girl team took a summer break last week to enjoy some much-needed, Jersey-style RNR. Of course, Hoboken + Jersey City happenings stop for no one — and while we were OOO, our cities made headlines with upcoming events, forthcoming businesses, and (to the dismay of locals) the return of lanternflies. To keep you in the know on all Hoboken + Jersey City, we’ve rounded up a few news stories you might’ve missed last week, July 2nd – July 10th. Keep reading for the latest Hoboken + Jersey City news

While we were gone, readers shared with The Hoboken Girl that lanternflies have made their way back to The Mile Square for another summer of… fun (jk). For any run-ins you might have with these sinister creatures, here’s what to do when you see one, and here’s how to safely kill them.

Jersey City’s Hank Schwartz’s Delicatessen Expands

Hank Schwartz’s Delicatessen and Appetizing, a pop-up deli, recently announced it will expand its operations. Jason Stahl, the man behind Hank Schwartz, told HG that he will be operating out of a ghost kitchen later this summer, and will have a booth at the Riverview Farmers Market on the first and third Sundays of each month. “We’re starting out with our jars of dill and spicy pickles, a lox sandwich, housemade celery soda, and maybe some other noshes and drinks,” Jason said. This will be in addition to the weekly order-ahead items available via Hank Schwartz’s website.

Hudson County Removes Newark Street Cobblestone

Newark Street in Hoboken was one of the few cobblestone roads left in Hoboken — this past week, however, Hudson County removed the cobblestones stretching from Hudson Street to Washington Street. In a statement to The Hoboken Girl, Marilyn Baer of the City of Hoboken shared: “The cobblestones on Newark Street are not historic and were installed in 2016 by the county but unfortunately, over time, they have proven difficult to maintain and created safety hazards. While [Hudson] County is removing the stones, they will be replacing them with an asphalt pattern that will mimic a cobble/ Belgian block appearance, but without the maintenance challenges that created the hazardous conditions present before the Belgian block was removed.” Marilyn also shared that “this project is separate from the Court Street project which is still in the public design phase.” Another representative from the City told HG that the County has full authority to do what it wants on county roads, but the City was aware and gave a courtesy okay.

We Joined Threads

In a somewhat cruel irony, Meta launched its new mobile app (and Twitter rival) Threads on July 6th. Though we were formally on break, we had to see what the text-based microblogging app was all about — and frankly, we’ve been having fun. Give us a follow us @thehobokengirl and our sister accounts @themontclairgirl, @theasburyparkgirl, and @thecatskillsgirl and prepare for the same Hoboken + Jersey City fun… with a tinge of chaos.
