December is a really eventful month with Hanukkah in full swing, and Christmas around the corner… But, it is even more eventful for Hoboken High School. Hoboken’s only public high school has several exciting events taking place this month, which are definitely worth checking out or telling your child about. Ranging from in-school opportunities for your HHS student to after-school/weekend happenings for everyone in the family to enjoy {even if you aren’t a Redwing}, there is truly something for everybody to immerse themselves in.

Thursday, December 6th’s City Hall Tree Lighting

The City of Hoboken’s tree lighting is a yearly tradition done in our town to celebrate the beginning of the festive season. As this event is not only a school focused celebration, it still features Hoboken High’s travel band {The Rockin’ Redwings}. They will be performing a range of holiday instrumental pieces for anyone to dig. This will take place Thursday night at the front of City Hall at 6PM. Bring your families for a wonderful night filled with holiday entertainment!

Friday, December 14th’s Middle School/High School Winter Concert

Out of all of the lively occasions planned for this month, this is the most important one for the music department. Hoboken Middle/High School’s Winter Concert is a festive show that students have prepared for months, practicing for hours both during and after school, and imprinting their performances in their brains so they exhibit them to the best of their ability. There is no excuse to miss this concert in particular, as it is the most anticipated compared to the other music-related festivities

Friday, December 7th: The International Club’s Japan Event

The Friday of this week, the International Club {Classrooms Without Walls} is holding an event for the children of Hoboken in the high school cafeteria to celebrate Japanese culture. This is because in April of 2019, they will be visiting Japan during Spring Break. There will be arts and crafts tables, Japanese snacks for sale, and students to welcome your child and teach them a few things about the beauty of Japan and what it has to offer. Entrance is $5, and the event is suitable for Pre-K 3rd-grade students. It will be from 3:15PM to 5:15PM that day. Welcoming everyone to come out and learn something new about our world!

Hoboken High School’s Toy and Food Drive

Yearly, Hoboken High School runs both a toy and food drive around the holiday season. Staff highly encourages the students, parents, and any Hoboken resident who would like to make a donation to either one to please do so. Through these drives, the proceeds go to Redwing families that are in need of a holiday dinner or gifts for their children. The holidays are all about giving- not receiving, so please go out and donate. The toy drive ends on Wednesday, December 19th and the food drive ends on that same week on Friday, December 21st.

PGP Opportunities for HHS Students:

The affairs planned are mostly for the clubs of the building and for the general public, however, there are also some cool PGP programs for students. ‘PGP’ stands for ‘Personal Growth Period’. It is basically a double period out of the school day {out of 9 periods in total} at Hoboken High School. It is during 5th and 6th period, which gives students about 80 minutes to eat their lunch, as well as participate in whatever lecture is available, attend a club meeting, do their homework early, or take advantage of tutoring for their classes. It gives the children a sense of healthy freedom to better themselves or find a new interest. This month’s special PGP schedule includes the following.

December 3rd: PGP Informational Session: Girls Who Code

December 5th: PGP Lunchbox Lecture Series: Stevens Pre-College Visit & Programs

December 6th: PGP Lunchbox Lecture Series: Athletic Empowerment Session

December 12th: PGP Lunchbox Lecture Series: Emergency Nursing

December 13th: PGP Lunch Box Lecture Series: Urban Problems Sustainability

December 19th: The History of Christmas

Make sure to support Hoboken High School {+ the Hoboken Public Schools} at these upcoming December events!
