A popular Hoboken and Jersey City coffee shop has closed one of its stores — but not to worry, because the brand is opening a new location just a few minutes away. Hidden Grounds Coffee — which has stores in Hoboken, Jersey City, New Brunswick, Brooklyn, and New York City — recently closed its 79 Hudson Street outpost in Hoboken. While locals close to the former Hudson Street store have lost a spot to grab a cup of java as of Sunday, July 28th, Hidden Grounds hinted that a new Jersey City location will open soon in its place. Read on for more about the closure and what we love about Hidden Grounds’ other locations in Hoboken and Jersey City.
The Hudson Street Closure + New JC Location
On Sunday, July 28th, Hidden Grounds Coffee announced the closure of its 79 Hudson Street location via Instagram:
“Thank You, 79 Hudson, Hoboken Community!
Today marks our last day at the 79 Hudson St., Hoboken, NJ location. While we are excited to move this location to Jersey City, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the memories we’ve made here.
From watching your dogs grow up to celebrating your milestones—moving to Hoboken, getting married, finding your way in a new city—we’ve loved every moment. Your support during happy hours, dosa waffles, and post-pandemic times has meant the world to us.
We could talk about how our move comes after facing a rent increase, outgrowing our space, dealing with an outdated electrical panel, and a $40k air conditioner repair bill. BUT the most beautiful thing about running a business is that neither sadness nor happiness lasts forever; one always follows the other, sometimes within hours. And hey, at least we won’t miss that broken AC!
We’ll miss the charm and smells of this space, but not our staff—they’re coming with us. We hope you’ll visit us at our 700 Garden St. store in Hoboken and stay tuned for our third Jersey City location.
Thank you for all the memories and your continued support. Here’s to new beginnings!
With heartfelt gratitude,
Spoorthi & Anand | Hidden Grounds Chai and Coffee House”

Hidden Grounds attributed the closure to a rent increase, an outdated electrical panel, broken air conditioning, and a general desire for a larger space. It seems that space is in Jersey City — in the post, the team teased that a third Jersey City location is currently in the works, which would employ the original staff from the Hudson Street location. We’ll keep you updated as more details come out surrounding the new Chilltown outpost. For now, locals can visit Hidden Grounds at 700 Garden Street in Hoboken, and 148 1st Street + 276 1st Street in Jersey City.
About Hidden Grounds Coffee
^ The 148 1st Street location in Jersey City
Hidden Grounds‘ owners Anand Patel and Spoorthi Kumar are entrepreneurs who were both inspired by their Indian childhood memories of the Masala Chai, as well as an interest in local coffee sourcing. They wanted to open a coffee shop that had high-quality coffee and a strong hint of those childhood memories of the masala chai.
While the coffee at Hidden Grounds is sourced from different countries, the tea is mainly sourced from India. Anand believes that getting into the ground reality research has helped them craft a menu that keeps people coming back for more. The quest for the best included exploring coffee estates throughout India, and trying to source the best supplies.

As for more on the menu items, the selections vary at each Hidden Grounds location, with some similarities throughout — but each has a wide selection of coffee drinks and more produced through different methods of brewing. From the lighter, specialty beans to the dark-roasted classics, the baristas put care into every cup they brew. The experimentation with the menu is truly what has us all gripped — from Rose Chai to Masala Chai and the cold brew, Hidden Grounds has so many fun and unique drinks at each of its locations.

Beyond coffee, guests will also be greeted by an ever-rotating food menu that outlines the made-to-order bagels, toasts, and sandwiches of the day.
