Rumors have been swirling about Gotan in Jersey City, and our DMs reflect it. The café, located at the corner of Van Vorst and Morris at 198 Van Vorst Street, has been serving the neighborhood since 2023 and has quickly become a local go-to. With questions popping up about its future, we decided to do some digging. Here is what we found about the apparent closure of Gotan in Jersey City and what could be next for the space.
About Gotan Cafe
Originally rooted in New York City, Gotan Cafe brought its signature coffee culture to Jersey City in January 2023. The café served thoughtfully crafted espresso drinks in a cozy, welcoming space, alongside a light and seasonal menu. Guests could expect fresh, vegetable-forward dishes, made-to-order plates, vegan options, healthy bowls, and unique pastries, all prepared with an emphasis on quality ingredients and creativity. The Hoboken location mirrors the same menu and experience and remains open at this time.
What We Know
After getting several DMs from readers asking if Gotan in Jersey City had closed, The Hoboken Girl team decided to check it out. Google now lists the location as permanently closed, and the Jersey City location is no longer shown on Gotan’s official website. To see for ourselves, we stopped by the space and noticed a new logo + name, “The Collective Brew,” on the door. A sign underneath reads, “Sorry, we are closed for the weekend, reopening next weekend.”
The Hoboken Girl team received a DM from @nepalteacollective confirming that they will be taking over the former Gotan space. Based on the brand’s Instagram, the concept centers around freshly sourced Nepali teas, including white tea, green tea, oolong, chai, and more.
We’ve reached out to the Gotan team for more details about the Jersey City closure and the status of the Hoboken location at 770 Jackson Street. We’ll update this story as soon as we learn more.
