There’s a new Italian bakery coming to Jersey City, with an unusual pairing at the helm. Delizioso Bakery + Kitchen was started by two couples at a crossroads. These friends, one who was retiring from the NYPD, and the other who had baking in his blood, were on a quest to bring New Jersey a full-service kitchen combining old, Italian favorites with a modern twist. Ralph Guzzo and Eric Weshner began a journey, along with their wives Giuliana and Lynne, to create a new bakery and eatery tailored for Jersey City. Read on to learn more about how Delizioso Bakery + Kitchen, located at 273 16th Street in Jersey City, is planning to open its doors on May 18th.

The Road to Delizioso

Ralph has been in the bakery business since he was a kid, continuing to master his craft every step of the way. A few years ago, the ingredients started coming together to create the perfect recipe for Delizioso. What started as a move from Staten Island to New Jersey, turned into not one, but two bakery locations.

After working through some hiccups, before COVID-19 completely halted construction (a few times), the team found a second location to open first, to get their delicious baked goods and other eatery items to the New Jersey Community.

The Jersey City location (273 16th St, Jersey City) will open later this year, hopefully within the next few months. If you can’t wait that long, don’t worry, because the Princeton location (205 Witherspoon Street, Princeton) is opened on May 18.

Delizioso makes its bread and dough in-house, including its Roman pizzas. In Princeton, the menu consists of classics like avocado toast for breakfast to unique options including an open-faced blueberry sandwich. The Jersey City menu is TBD.

A Part of the Community

Owners

According to its owners, the Jersey City location will be a home away from home for locals. Delizioso aims to serve its neighbors throughout the day — starting the day with breakfast, coming back for lunch, and then finishing up the day with tapas and a cocktail at quitting time.

The menu is still being created, but one thing is for certain: the founders of Delizioso want to fully immerse the eatery in what the community needs.

Our goal for both our locations is to create a long-lasting relationship and bond with the community,” said Eric.

The owners have found local food pantries to donate excess food at the end of the day, and are also mindful of the pandemic’s effects on the community.
