If you’re looking for a new spot to try out for your hair blowout/cut/color routine, we may have found just the place. 6th Borough Salon, located at 338 Park Avenue in Hoboken, is a full service hair boutique that we stumbled upon not too long ago. But is it more than just a pretty face {read: exterior?}. We recently went for a blowout and here’s how it went:

As far as aesthetics, 6th Borough has it down pat. It’s a cozy, intimate vibe with cute decor and good hygiene {essential for any salon}. There has actually been a salon there for over 20 years, but they remodeled and brought in some new talent to spice it up. One such gal is Melanie, who was our blowout specialist {though she is a cut/color whiz as well}. You may recognize her as she’s been in Hoboken for several years as a stylist and grew up locally in Bayonne.

The Blowout

When opting for the type of blowout, Mel was super helpful and didn’t want to just get straight to work like some salons {ya know, just a number type biz}. She listened to the requests {beachy waves, obviously}, and immediately said, “Oh perfect, I just learned a new technique that is perfect for this.” Yasss.

Her new technique? Curling hair in different directions {not all just one way like a Texas blowout a la Real Housewives}. Digging it, so we headed to the shampoo + conditioning chair and then we were in business. See below for how it ended up:

L-O-V-I-N-G it, and mind you it lasted for about 2-3 days {full disclosure dry shampoo needed but the curls were pretty intact, especially when going for that messy look}. They have a delicious-smelling line of products that you *must* check out while you’re there {forget the name but obsessed with how they smelled!}. It’s also worth mentioning that she was lovely to chat with — and it’s easy to tell she’d be pretty honest about what your hair needed if you were seeking some expert advice.

The Vibes

As far as the salon itself, it was a Saturday and the small locale was bustling with clients — who you can tell are regulars and love to come in. They were chatting away, talking color, style, and the rest. James Huelbig and Amy Franco are the owners of the salon, and they were busy with clients {and Mel had a full roster before + after}.

We got to chat with them for a few, and it’s clear they’re dedicated to client satisfaction and innovative techniques. James has owned this location for over 20+ years, and Amy came on in May to do a full rebranding. Both have lived in Hoboken for most of their lives, which definitely gives them some OG street cred. Regardless, the two clearly outdid themselves, because we had a lovely little Saturday afternoon there — and will definitely be back soon!
