100+ Years of History in Hoboken

Sparrow Wine & Liquor Company’s roots date back to 1922, when it first opened as the Sparrow Cigar Company in Hoboken’s industrial era. Today, it remains family-owned and operated by second- and third-generation members Armando and Lazaro Luis, alongside a team of longtime employees, including assistant wine director Jay Emminger.

Armando, Lazaro, and Jay bring over 100 years of combined experience in wine, beer, and spirits to the company, and it shows. Sparrow has built a reputation for thoughtful buying and was even named as a finalist for National Retailer of the Year in 2019 by Market Watch. (And it was one of the smallest nominees ever. A big win for Hoboken!)

Wines + Spirits Selected with Intent

Sparrow Wine & Liquor Company

What we love about Sparrow Wine & Liquor Co. is how intentional the selection feels. Rather than stocking shelves with common, mass-market brands, the shop focuses on a highly curated mix of wines, craft beers, and spirits from around the globe, with a strong emphasis on family-run producers that bring an authentic, homey feel to its selections.

Behind the scenes, the team is always tasting and discovering new bottles, with a focus on finding wines that offer great quality and real value for the price. To keep customers up to date, Sparrow hosts weekly in-store tastings from Thursday through Saturday.

After more than a century in Hoboken, the Sparrow team knows the community well. Armando Luis, owner and Wine Director, who has lived in town since his teens, brings over 45 years of experience and an incredible knowledge of global wine from years of travel. Lazaro Luis, the Craft Beer and Spirits Director, has over 20 years of experience and brings a knowledge of craft beer in particular. Jay Emminger, also a long-term resident with 45+ years of experience in the food and beverage industry, leads tastings and helps customers navigate wine + food pairings.

The Sparrow Wine & Liquor Company team prides itself on helping customers find the right bottle for any occasion, whether it’s a casual night in or a special celebration. Shoppers can also explore curated collections and easy-to-follow educational content on the store’s website. The team wants the shop to be a go-to for good times and celebrations, and caters to customers so they can purchase with confidence and joy.
