Reflecting on the end of the year always brings a spirit of giving. In fact, all across America, people arguably give back to their communities during the month of December more than any other time of the year {but if you are an avid HG reader, you know it’s something that we encourage all year round}. Join in on this tradition right here in Hudson County — as we’ve rounded up ways to volunteer and give back all month long. Keep reading for all the volunteering opportunities in Hoboken and Jersey City for December 2019.

Sundays in December — Yappy Hour at Tally-Ho {215 Washington Street, Hoboken}

Head to Tally-Ho Sundays in December to drink for a good cause. Pitchers are just $10 and $1 for every pitcher purchased will be donated to the Liberty Humane Society. Grab a pitcher of sangria, mimosa, man-mosas, or draft beer at the special price from 12:00PM-10:00PM.

 Saturdays in December — Volunteer Gardening {1 Audrey Zapp Drive, Jersey City}

Liberty State Park is hosting Volunteer Gardening on Saturdays in December. Beginning at 9:00AM every week, volunteers are needed to help continue to beautify the park. Individuals and volunteer groups are all welcomed, with no experience or pre-registration required. December 1st-11th — Jersey City Cares Coat Drive {160 1st Street, Hoboken Hoboken + 739 Bloomfield Street Hoboken}

As the temperatures drop, the need for warm clothing increases. Every year, Jersey City Cares donates over 30,000 coats to those in need throughout Hudson County. This year’s drive will run through December 11th and donations can be dropped off at Lorraine’s House of Styles and Little Linguists Hoboken. Please bring new or gently used coats for the drive and please keep in mind that old or stained coats will not be accepted. For more information, click here. 

December 1st-13th — HOPES Community Toy Drive {532 Jackson Street, Hoboken}

Help bring a smile to a child this holiday season. Join HOPES Community Action Partnership, Inc. in giving back to the community for its third annual toy drive.Toys will be shared at the Community Game Night in December. There are two ways to donate — purchase from the Wish List here {no drop-off necessary} or drop-off toys at 532 Jackson Street Unit 1B. December 1st-20th — Newport Centre Food Drive {30 Mall Drive West, Jersey City}

Newport Centre is hosting a food drive now through December 20th. Shoppers, employees, and retailers are encouraged to donate canned food or perishable items and drop them in the donation bin located near Guest Services in Center Court on Level 1. Newport Centre is facilitating this food drive in conjunction with Saint Peter’s University’s Food Pantry. All donations will serve those in need in Hudson County.

December 3rd — Shelter Night {300 Bloomfield Street, Hoboken}

Join your local Rotary club as it helps to prepare meals for the homeless in partnership with the Hoboken Shelter. Come and serve as long as you are able. Serving begins at 4:00PM.

December 3rd — Jubilee Center Giving Tuesday Cocktail Party {601 Jackson Street} 

The Jubilee Center is hosting it’s 2nd Annual Giving Tuesday Cocktail Party on December 3rd. The event will begin at 6:30PM. With a donation, enjoy spirits, light hors d’oeuvres and sounds by DJ Matt. To make a donation, click here and to register for the event, click here.

December 3rd — CASA Information Session {595 Newark Avenue, Jersey City}

CASA volunteers have the opportunity to directly impact foster children in the Hudson County area. CASA aids children with medical care, academics, and enrichment activities right in our own backyard. They are in need of volunteers and are ready to share information with those interested. The meeting will begin at 6:30PM. For more information on CASA, visit here. 

December 3rd — Giving Tuesday at LUSH Newport Centre {30 Mall Drive, Jersey City}

Pop into LUSH Cosmetics any time on December 3rd, and purchase any size of the beautiful Charity Pot Hand and Body Lotion to give back 200% to the Charitable Giving Partners. Year-round 100% of the purchase price of Charity Pot Hand and Body Lotion is donated to small grassroots organizations working on human rights, environmental justice, and animal protection. This year on Giving Tuesday, Lush will match up to $150,000 to additionally support five groups working to uphold the rights of nature, protect biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. This Giving Tuesday, support Indigenous Peoples in the Andes and the Amazon in building sustainable businesses, and rainforest protection; holding political leaders accountable for climate action; and communities most impacted by climate disasters. Join the PAD PAWS Rescue for a night of food, drinks, raffles, and fun at Hudson Hall. The evening will begin at 6:30PM. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here. All proceeds benefit PAD PAWS Rescue. Get more information here.

December 5th — WE Meetup: Toy Drive Edition {1200 Washington Street, Hoboken}

Join Women Entrepreneurs of Hudson County for its final meetup of the year from 4:30-6:00PM. WE has partnered with the Masonic Lodge for the toy drive. Tickets for the meeting are $6 and all proceeds will benefit WE. Attendees are asked to bring one or two toys for the drive to be donated to children in the area. December 5th  — Year-End Gala {502 Washington Boulevard, Jersey City}

The Hudson County Latino Foundation in conjunction with WE Empower Women Inc., invite you to celebrate the accomplishments of women in the community. The event will be held at Battello and will begin at 6:00PM. This fundraiser will be filled with food, drinks, and casino games. Tickets are $150. December 7th — Jersey City Ties 9th Annual Toy Drive + Happy Hour {322 2nd Street, Jersey City}

Guests are asked to bring unwrapped toys or gift cards suitable for children aged five to 14. All donations will be given to the children of Hudson County’s Boys & Girls Club. Please, no toy guns or nerf guns. Cash donations are also accepted for the purchasing of additional toys and gift cards. All cash donations will be matched by Jersey Ties.

December 8th — Pictures with Santa {1422 Grand Street, Hoboken}

Hudson County CASA is hosting its annual Pictures with Santa Fundraiser on December 8th at Koko Klub. There will be fun for the whole family as children meet Santa Clause and have their photo taken. Photos will be taken from 9:00AM-5:00PM with a break from 12:30PM-1:00PM. All proceeds will benefit children in foster care. For more information, click here. 

December 8th — Pet Photos with Santa {235 Jersey City Boulevard, Jersey City}

Join the Liberty Humane Society for its annual Pet Photos with Santa on Sunday, December 8th. For each $20 donation, pet owners will receive a glossy print to take home as well as a digital edited copy sent later that week. Don’t miss this opportunity for some precious holiday moments in front of the camera. Photos will start sharply at noon. First come, first photographed. Get more information here.

 December 10th — Merry Match {422 Willow Avenue, Hoboken}

Consider a donation to the Mustard Seed School and double your impact. For three days only, the Board of Trustees will match every dollar that is donated to the school up to $100,000. Donations can be made here and are helpful for technology upgrades, professional development for teachers, enhancements to our academic and fine arts programs, and need-based financial aid. December 11th —  Hoboken Police & Fire Department Toy Drive {630 Washington Street, Hoboken}

Hoboken’s police and fire departments are joining forces to gather unwrapped holiday toys for children in our area. They are also joined in part by Hoboken Grace and the Hoboken Housing Authority. The drive will take place from 6:00PM-8:00PM. For those who cannot attend, gifts can be dropped off at either station or donations can be made via Amazon. December 12th  — 2nd Annual Wintertide Benefit Concert {704 Jefferson Street, Hoboken}

St. Ann’s Catholic Church presents Jeremy Beck’s Wintertide — a celebration of the season  — benefit concert and post-reception for Family Promise of Hudson County. The concert will begin at 8:00PM and the reception will follow directly after. General admission tickets are $30 and seniors/students are $25. December 13th — Jersey City’s 23rd Annual Toy Drive {280 Grove Street, Jersey City}

Registration is now open for Jersey City’s annual toy drive. Registration is open to Jersey City residents. For those wishing to donate, toys for children ages one to 12 are needed. Please bring all gifts unwrapped to the Resident Response Center Monday through Friday from 9:00AM-6:00PM. December 11th will be the last day to drop off gifts. December 14th – 7th Annual Jersey City Mayor Concert {54 Journal Square Plaza, Jersey City}

Mayor Steven Fulop and the Dante Alighieri Society of Jersey City are hosting the annual Holiday Concert. Children’s gift donations are welcomed and appreciated at this free event. December 17th — The Hoboken Holiday Market {92 River Street, Hoboken}

Shop for a good cause this year. The annual Hoboken Holiday Market will be happening over at Birch, and this year, a portion of the proceeds will be going towards the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Core, a Hoboken-based team of volunteers providing emergency care to the city. Ongoing Opportunities:

TRUEMentors — Join Jersey Cares in Mentoring + Enrichment in Hoboken every Tuesday from 6:00PM-8:00PM. Volunteers are asked to spend time with, mentor, and manage children ages seven to 17 on a weekly basis.

Hunger Helpers in Hoboken — Join JerseyCare at the Hoboken Shelter every Thursday to serve dinner. Volunteers are asked to dress casually and come excited to serve and engage in conversation with dinner guests. All volunteers must bring one of the following items for donation: garbage bags, coffee, hot/cold cups, paper/plastic plates, toilet paper, napkins, utensils {especially forks}, and/or laundry detergent. Volunteers are needed from 11:00AM-3:00PM daily.

Big Brothers Big Sisters — If you have an interest in fostering an on-going relationship with a local student, Big Brothers Big Sisters has the perfect opportunity. To start, head to their website to fill out an application before the interview process to ensure that you are a good fit. Time commitment is at least one year.

America Needs You — Apply to be a 2019 America Needs You {ANY} Mentor Coach today. ANY mentors are dynamic leaders in their respective fields willing to help first-generation college students through their higher education and early careers. As a mentor coach, you attend Saturday workshops and form a long-term, one-on-one mentoring relationship with a first-generation college student, while becoming part of a vibrant network of industry-diverse professionals.  Liberty Humane Society {235 Jersey City Boulevard} — Join the exemplary staff at Liberty Humane Society as an LHS Ambassador. Ambassadors are asked to assist in ensuring the shelter facility is organized, clean, and welcoming as this is imperative for placing animals in forever homes. Volunteers are needed in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Click here to start the application process. Additionally, every Wednesday, the Liberty Humane Society offers low-cost wellness clinics for pets. Times between 4:00PM-6:00PM can be secured online. Walk-in pets are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Review this list for information on available services.

Deliverance Children’s Ministry {3 Armstrong Avenue, Jersey City} — Deliverance Children’s Ministry is looking for volunteers in various capacities including activities coordinator, social media coordinator, carpenter/painter, maintenance/housekeeping assistance, community beautification coordinator, and more. DCM was founded out of the desire to develop leadership and activism in children and youth. For more information click here.

Better Tomorrows {471 Pacific Avenue, Jersey City} — ESL tutors are needed at Better Tomorrow. Better Tomorrow is asking for mostly Spanish-speaking individuals who are looking to improve their English skills to use published curriculum materials to match students’ reading, speaking, and writing skills. Young Cosmetologist Program {70 Pamrapo Avenue, Jersey City} — The Young Cosmetologist Program is free and open to all students who have an interest in cosmetology as a career option. Volunteers are needed on Friday evenings from 4:00PM-6:00PM to facilitate tutor sessions and help with homework.

Hockey in New Jersey {807 Summit Avenue, Jersey City} 

Hockey in New Jersey provides inner-city children the opportunity to learn and play ice hockey, completely free of cost. New Jersey Hockey is specifically looking for on and off ice volunteers in Jersey City. On-ice coaches will help assist with practices and coach teams in games. Volunteers are needed at Pershing Field Ice Rink in the Heights, with 350 Jersey City boys and girls. The season runs from the end of October — March. Jewish Institute for Global Awareness {80 Grand Street, Jersey City} — The JIFGA is looking for volunteers to enhance the organization’s visibility and its ability to get the mission out to the general public. The position involves writing, editing, marketing, and public relations efforts. Material to be produced may include press releases and other marketing collateral. Family Promise of Hudson County {324 Communipaw Avenue, Jersey City} — Family Promise of Hudson County provides temporary homes for Hudson County families experiencing homelessness. Day volunteers are needed from 7:00AM-6:00PM and evening volunteers are needed from 6:00PM-6:00AM. Day tasks include assisting in the office and managing the needs of the families while evening tasks include spending time with the families, cooking or bringing dinner, and even sleeping over. Jersey City + Harsimus Cemetery — Volunteers are needed at the Jersey City + Harsimus Cemetery to assist with grounds beautification. Tasks include pulling weeds, assisting with the ANGELS Garden, and caring for the goats on the grounds. Visit the site for more information.

Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corp {707 Clinton Street, Hoboken} — As the only all-volunteer ambulance corp in Hudson County, the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corp truly values support from the community. Get involved with this great organization that helps to save lives daily.
