Arrest Made in Fatal Downtown Jersey City Stabbing Incident

On Friday, October 24th, an alleged stabbing incident took place in downtown Jersey City. A spokesperson with Councilman James Solomon’s office confirmed the stabbing incident and resulting loss of life. Councilman James Solomon is a Jersey City mayoral candidate, he is included in this article because the incident took place in the ward that he currently represents. What We Know 

A representative for Councilman James Solomon’s office confirmed with The Hoboken Girl that the stabbing took place on Maxwell Street, commonly referred to as Maxwell Alley. She distinguished the street where the incident took place from the restaurant Maxwell Alley, as there had been confusion online. Maxwell Alley is a short block connecting Coles Street and Jersey Avenue, just off of the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza. 

The stabbing was a result of an interpersonal conflict between two people that escalated. Emergency services tended to the stabbing victim quickly, according to bystanders, and the Councilman’s office shared that the victim was taken to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery and passed away. Per the Councilman’s statement on Instagram, the suspect has been apprehended and is in police custody. Another source with the City confirmed that the incident was a homicide.

HG reached out to the Jersey City Police Department, which could not be reached for comment. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office released the following statement via X:

On Saturday, October 25th, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office issued a statement about the incident, confirming the homicide investigation. “Shortly after 12:20 p.m. [on October 24th], the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a stabbing in the area of Jersey Avenue, 1st Street, and Maxwell Street. Responding officers located an injured male with an apparent stab wound to the abdomen. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just after 1 p.m. The Cause and Manner of Death, as well as a positive identification of the male, are pending with the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office. During the initial investigation, a person of interest was identified and remains in custody. This matter is actively being investigated by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide
Unit and the Jersey City Police Department. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor at 201-915-1345 or to leave an anonymous tip at: http://hcpo.org/tips. All information will be kept confidential.”

On October 29th, the HCPO shared that an arrest had been made in the case.  Per a press release, “The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit has charged a 61-year-old male in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred in Jersey City on Friday, October 24, 2025.

Roberto Camacho, of Jersey City, is charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a(1)/(2), Felony Murder (during the commission of a robbery) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a(3), and Robbery in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:15-1a(1). He was arrested at the Hudson County Correctional Facility on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, where he has been detained since the crime occurred.

Shortly after 12:20 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a stabbing in the area of Jersey Avenue, 1st Street, and Maxwell Street. Responding officers located an injured male – later identified as Joan Segovia, 26 – with an apparent stab wound to the abdomen. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just after 1 p.m. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the Cause of Death to be a Stab Wound to the Chest and the Manner to be Homicide.”
