There are some restaurants that you’re always in the mood for, and La Isla is one of them. Before their uptown location {25 12th Street, Hoboken} opened in 2015, devotees of this Cuban restaurant would wait for untold amounts of time to get a seat at their original location in downtown Hoboken. {Which is temporarily closed right now.} This family-owned spot has been around for over 20 years and has a cult-like following in Hoboken + beyond. Lucky for us, La Isla uptown is offering delivery + pickup, so we can still get our fix while continuing to support this long-standing business.

La Isla is committed to serving traditional, authentic Cuban food made from the freshest + most genuine ingredients. Some of the most popular and beloved dishes include the ropa vieja, churrasco con chimichurri, and the Cuban sandwich empanada. They are also offering wines from their wine list to be purchased at retail prices. And, {somehow it keeps getting better} they now have a La Isla Mojito Kit — just add some rum. Their famous mojito mix is now available for purchase, and it includes a mind and “how-to” instructions.
La Isla’s History in Hoboken

The original La Isla Restaurant in downtown Hoboken has been a local favorite for over two generations. Featuring 39 seats in total and no liquor license {but BYOB welcome}, it’s a Cuban diner setting right out of Little Havana. La Isla expanded into a brand new 100 seat space near the uptown waterfront at the Maxwell Place in 2015.
This new location captures the character + charm of the original with the same sense of authenticity. The new restaurant also features a premium stocked full bar with over forty wines by the glass, a large selection of fine rums, original tropical cocktails, and a dynamic offering of craft beers and spirits.

Chef + owner Omar Giner opened La Isla Uptown after experiencing long-term success with downtown location. Critically acclaimed by the New York Times, Trip Advisor, and the Food Network, this location is just as authentic as the original. Omar keeps his heritage + culinary training in mind when creating fresh Cuban cuisine. He takes inspiration from growing up in his Cuban home and various Spanish eateries in northern New Jersey. Originally a pastry chef, Omar’s desserts are some of his most well-known + creative dishes.
Finding a New Normal

Like many other local businesses, La Isla has been working to adapt to this new normal, so that staff can continue working and customers can keep being fed. The team is ensuring they comply with the highest standards set by the CDC for the health and safety of employees and customers. Only offering pickup and delivery ensures there is less foot traffic through the restaurant and less risk of passing germs. The delivery service is also sourced from their internal staff, which is keeping more of their team working. They’ve even assigned some people new roles at sister company Sparrow Wine & Liquor Co.
