1st Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Administered to Hoboken Healthcare Workers

On Tuesday at 9:30 am, officials at the Hoboken University Medical Center (HUMC) provided the first doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to healthcare workers working at the hospital. Dr. John Rimmer, Director of the Emergency Department and Hoboken resident, and Dinorah Vargas, an ICU employee will be among the first workers vaccinated. Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla, Dr. Rimmer, Ms. Vargas, and hospital officials provided remarks following the vaccinations at a brief press conference.

This comes shortly after Jersey City Medical Center announced that Jersey City resident Thomas Melendez was the first person to receive a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in the city on December 21, 2020.

“Today in JC, Jersey City resident, and Security Supervisor at Jersey City Medical Center Thomas Melendez, 23, is the first to receive the Covid-19 vaccine at the hospital. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Loftus administered the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine,” Mayor Fulop stated in a Facebook post.

This comes shortly after Mayor Fulop announced that he’s teaming up with the Jersey City Health and Human Services Department to pursue an emergency resolution establishing six vaccination sites to prepare for the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines.

The City hopes to provide immediate access for residents and essential employees. The 6 Point of Distribution {POD} sites will be located in various areas throughout the city to ensure residents have convenient access to the vaccines. Read more here.

Hudson County will open its first COVID-19 vaccination site at the USS Juneau Center, Office of Emergency Management in Kearny. The vaccination center will be operated by the Hudson Regional Health Commission and overseen by the newly established Hudson County Vaccine Task Force.

University Hospital Newark is where the first vaccine was administered in New Jersey over a week ago.
