About the Show

At the center of BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB is Omara Portuondo, a famous Cuban singer + dancer who was celebrated across Cuba as the “Queen of Feeling.” In the play, years after stepping away from the spotlight, Omara is presented with an unexpected chance to revisit music and confront pieces of her past that were left behind. The story moves between memory and the present day, a unique spin on emotional storytelling that fills the theater with energy.

What we realized about BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB is that even for people who don’t frequent Broadway, it is the kind of show that pulls you in and keeps you engaged. The music score fits right in with the story, creating an immersive feeling. Performances from the show’s live band team + choreography crew add a special dynamic to each scene, and the acclaim speaks for itself: the choreography recently earned one of the show’s five Tony Awards.

Another thing we loved about BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB is how much care went into honoring the artists and history behind the story. Everything about the production draws directly from the Buena Vista Social Club band, showing off the cultural impact that shaped Cuban music across generations. The production has also worked wonders for the New York community, having partnerships with the New York Department of Education and The Situation Project to help introduce middle and high school students to Cuban, Hispanic, and Afro-Caribbean culture through arts programming. “Our programming will also provide a chance for students to develop critical musical skills while engaging directly with a Broadway show, perhaps for the first time ever,” as stated on the show’s website.
