What to Know

On September 30th, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy released a statement regarding the work scheduled to happen on the Willow Avenue Bridge. He said that, as County Executive, he is focused on improving the safety of roads and infrastructure around Hudson County.

The Willow Avenue bridge connects Hoboken and Weehawken. It is located at the northern edge of Hoboken and carries two-way traffic.

“To that end, several of the joints on the Willow Ave. Bridge in Weehawken are in severe disrepair,” Guy writes. “Currently, they may cause a hazard to motorists and bicyclists with loose concrete and exposed reinforcing bars…Thank you for your patience as we continue to upgrade Hudson County’s road infrastructure.”

Guy states Hudson County contracted Sparkwick Contracting Inc. to complete the repairs on the Willow Avenue Bridge. The work will be done daily between 9:30AM and 3:30PM, weather permitting. During working hours, there will be lane shifts to maintain a single lane in each direction at all times, so drivers can still travel over the bridge.

This comes after a Hudson County contractor accidentally paved over storm drains in the North end of Hoboken on Park Avenue in August ahead of a major storm. Residents and Hoboken officials criticized the County for a lack of response to the situation. Craig Guy issued a lengthy statement in response, saying, “We received reports about flushed curbs at certain locations on the project site and we are working with the contractor to rectify these issues. From day one of the project, the County’s project manager has been on location providing constant inspection and guidance.” It is unclear if the group working on the Willow Avenue Bridge, Sparkwick Contracting Inc., is the same group that paved over the storm drains.

This isn’t the only construction underway in this part of Hudson County. In Hoboken, work is being done as part of the Rebuild By Design project. Garden Street from 14th Street to 15th Street closed in mid-September. This construction to combat flooding issues is scheduled to run for three months.

The Hoboken Girl reached out to Hudson County for more information on the disrepair of this bridge, and asked if there were any reported incidents that contributed to this push to repair the bridge or if it was a proactive measure, if any other roads will be receiving the same work, and how this impact residents. We will update this post with any further comments.
