With the fall season in full swing, Hoboken is buzzing with residents back from summer breaks. This is the perfect time of year to come together and give back to our community. Check out the various options for getting involved in volunteer/support opportunities throughout Hudson County. Here’s a list of volunteering opportunities in Hoboken + Jersey City for the month of October {2018}:

Now through October 16th — Hoboken Girl Helps Product Drive Benefitting WomenRising {Various locations throughout Hoboken}

Did you know that 60% of women do not have direct access to feminine hygiene products? Hoboken Girl Helps is collecting pads, tampons, diapers, and wipes for WomenRising throughout the Mile Square for this women’s shelter. Drop-off locations are all throughout Hoboken: European Wax Center {1135 Maxwell Lane}, Massage Envy {1170 Maxwell Lane}, Amazing Lash {1025 Maxwell Lane}, Athleta {316 Washington Street}, Jojo Maman Bebe {407 Washington Street}, Hudson Yoga Project {44 Hudson Place}, and Boutique Reality {537 Garden Street}. You can drop off items at any of these locations during their normal business hours. The drive is our way of saying “Thank You” to WomenRising for nominating our team for our volunteer service this year. More info here.

Tuesday, October 2—Becoming a CASA Volunteer {595 Newark Avenue, Room #901}

Hudson County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a non-profit organization committed to advocating for the best interests of abused and neglected children. CASA works through trained community volunteers to ensure that needed services and assistance are made available to children while helping to move them toward safe and permanent homes. Hudson County CASA volunteers are everyday people who make a direct impact in foster children’s lives. They are trusted, dedicated adults who seek to improve children’s well-being. CASA volunteers get to know their assigned child and his or her circumstances and provide valuable information to the court. Judges rely on the volunteers’ recommendations to make the best decisions about the children’s futures. Check-out the interest meeting this month to learn more about how you can become a volunteer.

Friday, October 5th — AngelaCARES’ Chicken & Waffle Fundraiser {696 Ocean Avenue, Jersey City}

Back by popular demand is the AngelaCARES’ Chicken & Waffle Fundraiser. AngelaCARES provides the community with various programs supporting Alzheimer’s patients, caregivers, youth opportunities and more. This fundraiser will support their efforts of moving into a larger space to better serve the community. Chicken and waffles will be served from 10:00AM-6:00PM and tickets can be purchased here.

Saturday, October 6th — HCIA Shredding Day {Lincoln Park, Jersey City — parking lot near running track}

Papers piled up on the kitchen counter is an all too familiar scene. The Hudson County Improvement Authority is helping de-clutter while helping the environment by providing free shredding of important and confidential documents. Join other residents from 9:00AM-2:00PM at Lincoln Park to get to shredding.

Sunday, October 7th — Computer Only Recycling Program {Hoboken DWP — 256 Willow Avenue}

Most of us are guilty of it — getting a new computer and not knowing what to do with the old one. Help the environment by properly disposing of unused hardware at the Computer Only Recycling Program being hosted by the Hudson County Improvement Authority. Acceptable items are desktop computers, laptops, tablets, cell phones, and peripherals. Just a reminder: no TVs, please.

Monday, October 8th — Hoboken Housing Authority Family & Community Dinner {400 Harrison Street Hoboken}

The second Monday of each month is Family & Community Dinner night at the Hoboken Housing Authority. Come to meet and celebrate residents of The Mile Square over a delicious meal. Head to their Facebook page to learn more about volunteer opportunities for this event as well.

Saturday, October 13th — TECCS Yard Sale {285 Union Street Jersey City}

Cleaning out the garage ahead of winter to make room for the car in the snow sounds like a great idea. Doing it while helping a local organization sounds even better. Join The Ethical Community Charter School for their 3rd Annual Yard Sale. In addition to donating items to be sold, TECCS is looking for volunteers to help with posting signs, picking up coffee, staffing the sale, and more. Wednesday, October 17th — WomenRising Celebration of Service Gala {76 Audrey Zapp Drive, Jersey City}

Join Women Rising for a night to celebrate the tremendous service being done by fellow Hudson County residents. The event honors those making a difference in the community through acts of service. Hoboken Girl Helps is thrilled to be taking home the Volunteer Service Award this year. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to support WomenRising’s mission to provide resources to over 11,500 women and families annually. Head to their site to purchase tickets. The Gala begins at 6:00PM.

Wednesday, October 17th — Jubilee Center Benefit Event — An Evening of Mindfulness {1400 Clinton Street}

Join the Jubilee Center at the Mile Square Theatre from 7:00PM–8:00PM for an evening of self-regulation and coping skills for success in life, one breath at a time. A cocktail reception will immediately follow the workshop.

Saturday, October 20th —Computer Only Recycling Program {Jersey City Municipal Services Complex — 13-15 Linden Avenue East}

It’s your turn, Jersey City. Head to the JC Municipal Services Complex to properly dispose of old computers, laptops, cell phones, and peripherals to not only get rid of unnecessary hardware but to help the environment too. TVs will not be accepted.

Saturday, October 20th —There’s a Place for Us Benefit Concert {210 Hudson Street Jersey City}

Hosted by The Ethical Community Charter School Family Association, There’s a Place for Us is a benefit concert that celebrates African-American music while supporting TECCS’s Special Education and English Learners Programs. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails on the Jersey City waterfront while supporting a worthy cause. The show begins at 6:30PM.

Sunday, October 21st — Cuteicles’ Breast Cancer Awareness Event {389 Central Ave Jersey City}

Join Cuteticles for their First Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event and help in their fight against breast cancer. Head to the salon to enjoy spa services for a good cause. 50% of all proceeds from the day will go to the American Cancer Society. No appointments are necessary for the event and services will be done on a first-come, first served basis. Raffles, prizes, drinks, and refreshments will also be included in the day’s festivities. Their goal is $10,000 and the event takes place during normal business hours.

Wednesday, October 24th — CASA Volunteer Interest Meeting {100 Bloomfield Street}

If you don’t have a chance to make the interest meeting earlier in October, join CASA on October 24th at Little City Books to learn more about how to get involved. CASA Volunteers are trusted, dedicated adults who seek to improve children’s well-being. CASA volunteers get to know their assigned child and his or her circumstances and provide valuable information to the court. Judges rely on the volunteers’ recommendations to make the best decisions about the children’s futures. The meeting will be held from 7:00PM-8:00PM.

Thursday, October 25th — Eliminate Hunger Happy Hour {36 W 33rd Street New York, NY}

4 Little Souls Inc. is hosting its 3rd Annual Eliminate Hunger Happy Hour at Jack Demsey’s Bar on W33rd St. in NYC {just steps off of the 33rd Street PATH Station}. Tickets are $25 and will score you a drink ticket, appetizers, raffle entries and a donation to No Kid Hungry. Proceeds will benefit No Kid Hungry in an effort to end hunger in our communities and across the country. Tickets can be purchased here.

Saturday, October 27th — HoBOOken 5K {Pier A Hoboken}

Come out and support The Hoboken Shelter’s largest fundraiser of the year as they prepare to crush their $70,000 goal. Funds are used to provide over 500 meals daily and shelter for about 50 people nightly. The HoBOOken 5K is one of the state’s only costume runs, so be prepped with a great outfit and running shoes as there will be a costume contest with prizes. More information here.

Saturday, October 27th — Back to Hoboken Bar Crawl {Various Locations throughout Hoboken}

Now that summer is behind us, join Hoboken Happy Hour for the 13th Annual Back to Hoboken Bar Crawl. The crawl will begin at 12:00PM and participants will be given a schedule to follow which includes local favorites like McSwiggans, House of Que, Cadillac Cantina, Texas Arizona and more. Tickets can be purchased here and proceeds from ticket sales will benefit local charities such as the Jubilee Center.

Sunday, October 28th — Hoboken Out of the Darkness Walk {Stevens Institute of Technology—1 Castle Point Terrace Hoboken}

Out of the Darkness Community Walk is hosting this event to raise awareness and support for suicide prevention starting at 9:00AM. Directly benefitting the American Suicide Prevention Foundation, the walk will provide funds that allow for research, educational and support programs, and advocacy work for public policy. Sunday, October 28—Helping Hands Benefit Concert {601 Park Avenue Hoboken}

Pamela Ross and Friends presents “Helping Hands,” a benefit concert to support the Hoboken Homeless Shelter. Come enjoy an evening of music from Grace Ho, Regi Papa and Pamela Ross. Donations will be graciously accepted for the Hoboken Homeless Shelter and will be given through The Hudson School. The show will begin at 3pm and admission is free. Join Jersey Cares in Mentoring & Enrichment in Hoboken every Tuesday from 6:00PM-8:00PM. Volunteers are asked to spend time with, mentor and manage children ages 7-17 on a weekly basis.

Hunger Helpers in Hoboken

Join JerseyCares at the Hoboken Shelter every Thursday to serve dinner. Volunteers are asked to dress casually and come excited to serve and engage in conversation with dinner guests. All volunteers must bring one of the following items for donation: garbage bags, coffee, hot/cold cups, paper/plastic plates, toilet paper, napkins, utensils {especially forks} and/or laundry detergent. Volunteers are needed from 11:00AM-3:00PM daily.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

If you have an interest in fostering an on-going relationship with a local student, Big Brothers Big Sisters has the perfect opportunity. To start, head to their website to fill out an application before the interview process to ensure that you are a good fit. The time commitment is at least 1 year.
