Tucked away on a quiet street in Montclair is a stunning boutique hotel that once belonged to a prestigious family in another century. Located in the husband-wife duo’s hometown at 37 N Mountain Avenue – The George is so much more than just a charming, stylish hotel, it’s an experience that everyone should discover for themselves. Read on to learn all about the history of The George, the inspiration for opening it, what to expect when visiting (as our team did last week!), and how to win a Staycation at The George for yourself.

The History of The Property

Built in 1902 as a private home for Charles Van Vleck, the stunning location was later converted into a residential hotel, The Georgian Inn, for short-term stays in the 1940s. At this time, the Montclair branch of the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) relocated its New Jersey headquarters to the Queen Anne carriage house in the back.

In 2008, the historic building was granted landmark status, and in 2012, after it was purchased, the Inn underwent a full renovation. Bobbi and Steven designed each of the rooms to have a bespoke look and feel that’s distinctly different from the rest. Design-minded with a sophisticated style that’s worldly and chic, expect uncompromising comfort and luxe touches in each space. Inspired by Bobbi and Steven’s love of travel.

The stained glass windows were too incredible to remove, so instead, the team designed around them – making it a focal point of the space. The breath-taking high ceilings continue throughout the inn.

Plus, pamper yourself with complimentary amenities from our best-in-class partners. As the creative director of The George, Bobbi looked to get involved with some of her favorite brands that are the best in their space such as Audio Pro, Casper, Emma Bridgewater, Dopper, Dyson, EO, Flaneur, Hello!, Marine Layer, Nespresso, One Kings Lane, and SMEG. The vision for the project was to create a hotel that is comfortable, interesting, and ever-evolving.

What to Expect

The George consists of a whopping 32-rooms situated on four floors that are made up of standard queen and king, deluxe queen and king, a junior suite, a family room, an “apartment” suite, and the ‘George’ suite – which consists of 2 queen beds or 1 king bed, a separate living area, smart TVs, and more.

Each room has a distinctive name with a distinctive theme – in fact, the themes of the rooms are based on the name. The “Mike” room features photographs of famous celebrities with the name Michael, amongst them – Michael B. Jordan and Michael Jordan (of course), Michael Jackson, Michael Strahan, Michael Richards, Jean Michel Basquiat, Mickey Mouse, and even Mike from Monsters Inc. (a personal favorite).

The style pours into every room with red, white, and gray-hued linens mixed with vintage staples like mini Smeg fridges.

As for the design of the inn, as the creative director, Bobbi managed to not only keep but enrich the natural charm of the place with a modern twist. Think – a Tudor-style esthetic with warm tones and Instagrammable touches, like the beige sculptural resin side table situated beside a timeless black leather couch and plaid-covered accent sofa chairs.

The Inn makes a perfect venue for weddings and/or wedding photos. The wedding guests can even stay at the inn!

Guests are met with a grand staircase that looks like it was torn out of a Victorian-era novel and brought to life. Portraits of both familiar and unfamiliar faces hang throughout the inn that brings an unexpected element to the experience. It’s clear that thought went into every detail of space, including personal touches.

There’s also a mini pop-up shop located on the ground level that is always stocked with locally curated, unique goods. From wellness products to sporty pieces, the shop is a gem!

The Neighborhood

Our team experienced a mid-week staycation and it was the perfect complement to a busy week — we were able to relax in our luxe rooms while taking in the neighborhood through a vacation-eyed lens.

Just steps away from the Van Vleck Gardens and the Maine avenues, The George couldn’t be better situated anywhere else in town. Our team walked to barre class at The Bar Method, dined at Raymond’s for breakfast, and had a lively BYOB dinner at Samba — one of the first certified gluten-free restaurants in the country.

Guests can take a three-minute walk into the heart of town, Bloomfield Avenue and Church Street. The main streets are bustling with popular restaurants of all culinary cuisines, fitness studios, boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, and more.

One of the best perks about The George that locals can appreciate is that it’s dog-friendly. In fact, all dogs receive V.I.P. treatment – including a bed just for them.

Arguably the best feature + best-kept secret on the property is an unassuming room tucked away in the library labeled “closet” that stocks pure amazingness – candy, every type of chocolate, and lickerish candy you can think of is beautifully displayed shelf after shelf for the guests to indulge their sweet tooth before heading to bed. A candy + chocolate-lover herself, the hidden candy closet was one of Bobbi Brown’s personal stamps on the inn. They’ve truly thought of everything!
