When you are on the hunt for reasonably-priced furniture, it’s quite a daunting task of dealing with potential online scams, misleading photos, and — the worst part — meeting with strangers {Craigslist killer, anyone?}. Letting someone into your home that you don’t know and trust can be scary, and that’s where Urban Consign & Design, located at 38 Jackson Street, comes in.

After a successful 15-year run on Wall Street, Paul had ventured into retail sales and learned about mark ups and margins, swearing to his wife, “I’m never paying retail prices again!” Always having an entrepreneurial spirit, he knew he wanted to do something more with his career. He left sales to become a stay-at-home father to his first child, Parker, and tried to find his true calling. It wasn’t until his wife, Cyndi, dragged him to a local children’s consignment shop looking for “deals” that everything clicked. And thus, Urban Consign & Design was born!

Besides selling one-of-a-kind furniture and decor, Paul repurposes various industrial and unique items and creates lighting fixtures {that are basically works of art!}. Here are a few examples:

The unique fixtures, however, are just the tip of the iceberg. There are a ton of high-end furniture pieces that are available for purchase – consignment yes – but seemingly new; you would never even know that they were gently pre-owned, as they are so carefully curated.

So fun. I want to buy the whole room!

Besides furniture, Paul also does realtor staging; he even has a room that is set up to show some of his pieces. It’s an interesting dichotomy between the main area {filled with furniture} and the minimalist, sleek design of this area. Quite impressive {especially because he made that light!}, however you slice it!

Besides retail, Urban Consign and Design {of course} CONSIGNS! For those who want to sell furniture, there’s a special way to do so — which is described here. Pricing on furniture {especially given that some fixtures are handmade and refurbished as art} are reasonable, which is refreshing. When we were in his shop, Paul was super nice, and really made us feel welcome. He let us explore without hovering {a pet peeve of mine} and also allowed for us to ask questions and gave history on some of his items. This shop is really a gem downtown that helps aid the loss of the Frayed Knot {its neighbor, across the way}. So happy that Urban Consign is here, so make sure you take a trek to southwest Hoboken and visit!
