Leaders in Progressive Education for 75 Years

Stevens Cooperative School celebrated its 75th anniversary in May. A mother and educator named Mary Sill Baker founded the school in 1949 to engage a community of families to give local children a dynamic education. The school started as a preschool and has grown to include over 400 students in PreK 3 to 8th grade.

The school continues to be a leader in progressive education today. The full-day program, which starts in PreK 3, encourages students to interact with older students through mentorship + reading buddy programs.

At Stevens, classrooms are versatile laboratories for collaboration, creative thinking, + research. Students and teachers are partners in the education process.

The school is focused on creating academic experiences that engage all students. Since 2022, the school has followed a seven-day schedule cycle for deeper learning opportunities. The last day of each seven-day schedule is known as “LAB Day” which stands for “Learning and Belonging.”

“For middle schoolers, it’s a day to come together across campuses that are filled with student voice and choice, where 5th – 8th-grade students participate in electives, affinity and alliance groups, and student-led clubs,” Director of Curriculum and Innovation Rhiannon McElwee said.
