On Thursday, May 16th, Hoboken’s Monroe Center will be a sight to behold: residents gathered under the glow of 28-foot-tall electric structures, having individual dance parties in complete silence. In collaboration with QuietEvents, Hoboken Business Alliance (HBA) is hosting its first-ever Silent Disco at 770 Jackson Street under the Electric Dandelions art installation. The event runs from 6PM – 9PM and is free to attend, though RSVP is encouraged. The event was originally scheduled for today, May 15th, but postponed due to inclement weather. Read on to learn more about the Silent Disco event now happening in Hoboken on May 16th.

What to Know

If you’ve never been to a silent disco event, it’s exactly as it sounds — each guest wears a pair of wireless headphones and dances freely to whatever music is coming through the speakers. To spectators or passersby, these silent parties look silly, but on the dance floor, they’re so much fun.

The Electric Dandelions art installation went up in Hoboken earlier this year, as another initiative from HBA. There are a total of 10 dandelions throughout town — some at Pier A Park, some at the Monroe Center — all of which stand at 28 feet tall and are made out of steel and translucent LED lights. Truly spectacles of light and motion, the sculptures are the work of artist Abram Santa Cruz and Liquid PXL, a Los Angeles-based art collective.

On Thursday, May 16th, HBA is hosting the Silent Disco event at the Monroe Center from 6PM – 9PM. The event is totally free to attend and will feature music from three live DJs spanning different musical genres (expect some pop, throwbacks, R&B, and Hip-Hop, among other tunes). Headsets are given on a first-come first-served basis and feature a color LED light that signals which station guests are listening to.

RSVP isn’t required but is encouraged. Guests under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult, and all guests are required to put down a security deposit for the headphones (which will be reimbursed as long as the headphones are returned). You can RSVP here

“Silent Disco at the Electric Dandelions is a spring celebration that brings public art and self-expression to Hoboken,” said Roxanne Earley, Executive Director, of Hoboken Business Alliance in a press release. “It’s a celebration of Hoboken’s creative spirit, and we invite the community to join us for an unforgettable night of music and dancing under the stars and dandelions!”
