While dogs and cats are sadly brought to rescues and shelters in the Hoboken and Jersey City area on the regular, this sweet puppy, about 4 months old, found himself on Route 495 near Hoboken — running through traffic on Wednesday afternoon. A local Hoboken resident, Janelle Hoffman, jumped out of her car, dodging traffic to save him.

She took him right to Hoboken Animal Infirmary on Adams Street where the staff cleaned him up and treated him for minor wounds and scratches.

“In crazy turn of events, yesterday I found a puppy crossing a very busy section of 495,” Janelle said. “Thankfully, traffic stopped, and another driver and I were able to grab him and put him in my car. He is now in the very capable hands of Wise Animal Rescue, and they need help securing the funds to pay for his care. If anyone is able, I’d be so grateful for any donations you can make on Charlie’s behalf. He is the snuggliest little love bug, incredibly smart, playful, and curious. He clearly escaped some kind of terrible situation, and I want to make sure that his future is full of nothing but love and joy!”

The Hoboken Dog Lovers Facebook group quickly took action to spread awareness and get him the best treatment and placements, and the pup, affectionately known as ‘Corn Pop Charlie’ is now in the care of Wise Animal Rescue. Janelle wrote in the Facebook group, “Thank you to EVERYONE for all the support yesterday for little baby Charlie! Dana Luzzi and Matt Majer have stepped in (THANK YOU!!!), and he is now officially a Wise Animal Rescue pup! They are in need of some help with the funds for his care, if anyone is able to chip in – every little bit helps! He is bit wobbly on his feet, so he needs to see a neurologist to see what’s going on, and they are pricey! I want to do whatever I can to make sure his next chapter in life is everything he deserves. He is truly such a special (and VERY lucky!) little guy! Donate via the below button, and thank you!!!”

WISE Animal Rescue, a local foster + rescue team, has stepped up to help out and swiftly helped secure Charlie further medical care — bringing him to the neurologist this afternoon — as he was having some neurological issues — being very wobbly on his feet. Being that WISE is a foster-based rescue in New Jersey dedicated to rescuing animals of all ages and breeds, they are in need of donations to support Charlie’s potentially extensive medical care.

Editor’s note: So many dogs are in need, but sometimes certain pups pull on your heart strings a bit extra. Hopefully we can all come together to donate and help little Charlie get the best possible chance at restarting life on the right foot!

This situation comes on the heels of Liberty Humane Society’s announcement via email that “animal shelters are experiencing an influx in intake and a drop-off in adoptions – straining shelters with pets in need of a loving home,” likely due to the pandemic puppy surge over the last two years.

With the support of Best Friends Animal Society, Liberty Humane is also hosting a fee-free adoption event this weekend aimed to help pair animals over six months old with their forever homes. All adopted animals will be vaccinated, tested, spayed/neutered, and microchipped.

Meanwhile, Charlie’s living the life in Hoboken, as he mends from his injuries and receives neurological care. Says his current foster mom Dana, if you see Corn Pop Charlie around town in Hoboken, “be sure to say hello! He is super friendly and loves people and other dogs!”
