Jersey City is one of the most diverse communities in America, celebrating people from every culture, race, and background. And as with any city, it has become a great place to open up small businesses that infuse culture into the streets and support the community. Nesh’s Mediterranean Grocery + Deli does exactly that. Located at 489 Central  Avenue in Jersey City, this local spot serves up delicious and authentic Mediterranean food {and is open for online pre-order pickup + delivery, too during the current situation}. Here’s what to expect from Nesh’s:

How Nesh’s Came to Be

JK Therapy

Owner Laila Nesheiwat is a retired Jersey City teacher {having taught at PS#28 and PS#8} and is now the mastermind behind Nesh’s Grocery in The Heights neighborhood of JC. Nesh’s opened in August 2019 and Laila named her spot in honor of her late husband, Yaser Nesh — so between the delicious food and the heartwarming story behind the name, it’s a must-try.

Oh, and everything here is authentic, too. All of Laila’s recipes come from the Levantine countries {Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria} and are true to the food’s roots, made daily with fresh ingredients, and of course, love.

At Nesh’s, diners can enjoy baked goods and Mediterranean delicacies. Laila is serving the community her delicious, fresh dishes such as hummus, baba ganoush, falafels, baklava, and more. Another treat and must-order is the kube, a cucumber and yogurt salad, and labneh, which is a cheese made from salted, strained yogurt by draining its whey. Laila’s kindness and sweet spirit are surely another reason her customers keep coming back, too.

What to Expect Inside

Of course, we understand that physically visiting and dining inside Nesh’s isn’t a possibility right now, but when the day comes, here’s a preview of what to expect.

Inside the cozy space, you’ll find a salad bar stocked with fresh ingredients, pre-packaged meals, and an array of delicacies for the picking {and combo meal options} that are made fresh daily and served with pita bread. There are affordable kebab sandwiches, alongside vegetarian options like falafel and soups, as well. Prices range from $3 for soups to $7 for sandwiches. Diners can also get $1 grape leaves and spinach pie, alongside $2 meat pies. Nesh’s also has quick snacks available like chips and fresh baked goods as well as whole wheat packaged pitas and other grocery items.
