Summer is winding down, but the heat is still in full swing! While we look forward to the fun and sun all winter, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the humidity in this city of ours! There are so many options for staying cool this summer without being a slave to your apartment’s air conditioning. These recommendations are sure to cool the kids off and keep them happy and engaged in fun summer and fall activities. And who doesn’t want a “cool” Mama?

Pier C boasts a favorite of all kids—sand! Likewise, a favorite of all moms—gate! It’s well shaded during parts of the day, and there is also running water so kids can are sufficiently entertained and messy. For families with older kids, there is a great climbing area and a slide that is high enough to intimidate most Mamas.

The library is a favorite of so many families, but be sure to visit this summer to see the new Lego exhibit. Since it’s located right off Church Square Park, it makes for an effortless reprieve from the heat after you’ve hit the playgrounds or the spray dolphins.

Big Fun Toys is always a win with kids. It’s a welcomed place to cool off when running errands on Washington. Head straight for the train board in the back and you’re bound to have at least a 20 minute break in the refreshing air conditioning.

It may sound crazy, but IKEA in Elizabeth is a perfect outing for the whole family. Parents can get all the things for the house that they don’t need didn’t realize they needed and take advantage of the kids’ drop off service—60 minutes of childcare that is free of charge! Kids love the ball pit and climbing area. Tip: Ages 4-10 and must be potty trained. Be sure to also hit the food court for the $1 ice cream cone—that’s sure to have them begging for a return trip!

Where is your favorite spot to keep cool?
