Some of the best restaurants are ones where you can go for any event: A quick lunch bite with your girlfriends, spicy date night out with your partner, a large congratulatory dinner with the family, or a simple solo dinner complete with a book. For any occasion, Lola’s Tapas Bar is an ideal spot. This is one of Hoboken’s premier tapas and wine bars {albeit a slightly hidden gem — located at 153 14th Street uptown and off-the-beaten} which has been serving some seriously mouthwatering dishes since the year 2000. We recently stopped by this uptown location for some traditional Spanish cuisine. Here’s a bit more about this uptown Hoboken restaurant serving up tapas and delish sangria:

At First Glance

Lunch and dinner time in Hoboken on any Saturday is typically a crowded scene. We had a guest from out of town visiting for the weekend and didn’t want to have a “rushed” feel while catching up. By fate, we stumbled into Lola’s and could feel the family vibe. The scene felt like a totally laid-back ambiance — traditional to Spanish culture. The atmosphere is very European: there’s a water fountain in the middle of the restaurant, a cute cove-like corner seating, and a beautifully-painted mural adorning the rear wall. It’s hard to believe you’re just steps from Washington Street.

The Food + Menu

The literal definition of tapas is “small Spanish savory dishes, served with drinks at a bar” AKA “sign us up!” For starters, we opted for the more traditional fried calamari appetizer and the Coctel de Gambones {shrimp cocktail} were the go-tos. If feeling a bit more adventurous, try decadent bites such as the Salpicon de Mariscos {cold seafood salad in vinaigrette sauce} or the Ravioli de Langosta en Salsa de Vodka {lobster ravioli in vodka sauce = d.e.d. dead}.

Around the restaurant, decadent dishes from both land and sea poured out from the kitchen, some of which included the Rape con Alemejas en Salsa Verde {monkfish in their grandmother’ style} and Albondigas en Salsa Tomate {Spanish meatballs in a tomato sauce}. It was quite a challenging decision to order, as everything looked j’amaze. Or should we say asombroso.

Keeping super traditional, one MUST get the seafood paella {because srsly, what is a Spanish restaurant without trying the paella}. And boy did it not disappoint. Every bite consisted of perfectly-seasoned yellow rice and a variety of seafood — from shrimp to lobster to mussels and clams. This was all enjoyed while sipping on award-winning white sangria, of course. Price-wise, paella was about $21 for the dish, so pretty on-point with Hoboken prices {paella with lobster is going to run you around $27, FYI}. Appetizers run in the $10-$15 range.

When to Visit

The old saying, “it’s 5 o’clock somewhere” holds true on weekdays at Lola’s. From open to close on Monday-Thursday, happy hour is every hour of the day {12PM-11PM}. Enjoy an extensive and discounted drink and tapas menu at the bar only {but seriously, ideal for a quick after-work treat} with mojitos and margs @ $6 a pop. The only drawbacks we’ve been hearing after our wonderful visit was about the service — it appears that sometimes it’s busier than other times and can be pretty tough to get in and out if you’re looking for a quick bite. But if a long, enjoyable meal isn’t European, we’re not sure what is, and while there, the service was impeccable.

If you’re looking to host your own event, Lola’s is definitely a spot to consider. Their fully private room is open in the basement complete with its own bar, and the European feel continues in the décor downstairs. Your guests will feel like they went overseas for the night.
