Barre Babes: JC Barre Studio {A Review}

Since we’re always looking for new fitness adventures in Hoboken and Jersey City, we figured we’d scope out the “barre” scene in Jersey City. There are a lot of great fitness spots in Hudson County, so a trip to JC Barre — 419 Monmoth Street in Jersey City — was in the cards. This workout studio is in a quiet neighborhood, and you could miss it if you weren’t looking out for its corner location {just a quick Uber trip away from Hoboken so you don’t get lost}. Here’s our workout review of this spot:

The studio is tiny, and the classes are small and fresh. This bare-bones space is simple, and the no-frills décor is a welcome sight, with fun chalkboard doodles on the walls.

The Class

JC Barre put on a great B3 class {a combo of dance cardio, toning, and lots of planking, tiny lifting, toning, and tightening}. Kelly, our instructor, had good music, choreography, and kept the class fun and engaging. All of the instructors come from a dance background and are very well equipped to adjust where necessary to ensure there are no injuries — which is crucial in a ballet-inspired workout where small movements can tweak a muscle so quickly.

Difficulty Level: 8 out of 10

All of the classes at JC Barre are open level and can be modified to make it easier or more challenging, so it’s really up to you. Kelly’s class was plenty tough — leaving us sweaty and tired, the mark of a successful workout. But again — barre is all of what you make it as you can do modifiers, so put in your all and you’ll definitely feel that burn.

Class Offerings

This organic fitness studio offers B3 classes, PlyoJam, a cardio dance class, and Mommy and Me classes, too. Most of their classes are offered either early in the morning at 6am {for all you roosters out there}, mid-morning, and then beginning at 6:30pm. Although the studio is small, they have water and a few cute items available for purchase, including grippy socks and tanks.

^Um, yes please. The CUTEST mats!

Barre classes, as a general rule, can leave you high and dry in the cash department if you do them more than once in a while. Luckily, JC Barre has very economical-friendly pricing. A single class is $20, but if you’re a new student to the class — you’re in luck! Pricing is only $60 for a month of unlimited classes — CRAZY!

Who goes?

The class is 100% women — that’s a fact. If you’re looking for a place to meet some guys while sweating it out, this is not your jam — buuuut, after you go to the barre, you can go to the actual bar in Jersey City and you’ll probably have a different story. Just sayin’.

Have you been to JC Barre? What did you think?
