Hoboken Stands With Orlando

In the aftermath of the deadliest mass-shooting in United States history, Hoboken and JC residents gathered in solidarity to show their support for the victims and city of Orlando. On Wednesday, June 15th community members gathered at a vigil held on the steps of Hoboken City Hall. Community leaders, residents, and LGBT leaders stood together to mourn the loss of lives at this tragic event. The vigil ended with song tribute of “America the Beautiful.” Jersey City hosted a vigil the evening before at Newark Pedestrian Plaza that was attended by 3,000 people.

Hoboken Named the “Most Underrated US City”

On Thursday, June 22 Hoboken Patch reported that Matador Network named our beloved Mile-Square the “Most Underrated US City” in a recent report. Matador cited 19 reasons why including Pier 13, our waterfront views, and our dog-friendly bars {love!}. Even though some of the list was a bit sketech {and it’s obvious they don’t come here often, we know how great our little city is and we love when other people realize it too. Largest Free-Flying Flag Rises in Hoboken

For the second year in a row, the word’s largest free-flying flag rose over Hoboken on Tuesday, June 14th. According to MyCentralJersey.com, the flag-shaped hot air balloon was inflated at Stevens Institute of Technology in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Flag Day. The balloon is due to appear at the NJ Festival of Ballooning in Readington, NJ from July 29th through 31st.

 

Parkmobile, LLC Brings Mobile Payments for Parking

On June 22nd Parkmobile, LLC and the City of Hoboken announced a program that will allow customers to use their mobile phones to pay for parking at roughly 900 metered park spots in Hoboken.  The service will be lauched over the next months and customers can pay for parking using the mobile app. In order to use the app, customers must register for free on www.parkmobile.com and begin using the app to pay for parking. The time limits will still apply and the app will not allow users to purchase more time than allowed by the meters but can pay to refill the meter on the app.

 

Flood Pumps to be Lowered in Hoboken

On Friday, June 24th Hoboken officials and the North Hudson Sewerage Authority lowered the pumps for the H-5 wet weather pump station that is currently under construction in Hoboken. The pump station is entirely underground and should alleviate flooding in northwest Hoboken between 9th and 13th streets.  The station will have two pumps that each have the capacity to pump 40 million gallons per day which should help during heavy rains and high tide. The pumps being lowered are expected to be operation by August 2016.

 

NY Times Authors Coming to JC

On July 7th NY Times bestselling authors Christine Feehan {author of the Dark series, GhostWalker Series and the new Shadow Rider} and Karen Rose {Alone the Dark} and will be at WORD Jersey City for a book signing and discussion. The romance authors will be discussion paranormal romance, romantic suspense, and the romance genre in general. The event begins at 7:30PM. WORD is located at 123 Newark Avenue in JC.

Rapper Ray J Opens Bike Shop in Hoboken

Ray J {yes- that Ray J}  is opening up a new store, Raytroniks, where he will sell electric bikes/moped hybrids called Scoot-E-Bikes.  The bikes are foldable and weigh 56 poulds with top speed being 15 miles per hour. They also include a USB and Bluetooth for music connectivity.

 

JC Fab Lab 2016 Art & Tech Summer Camps

JC Fab Lab Summer Camp sign ups are kicking off on June 27th. Camp will run for 1 or 2 weeks per session depending on which themes are chosen. Camp sessions will run from June 27-Aug 4 at JC Fab Lab for kids ages 7-16 and are a great opportunity for kids to learn and make new friends right in the local community. Camps have both indoor and outdoor activities and run from 9:00AM-3:30PM with before and after-care available.  Registration is required so sign up soon as soon as possible as spots fill up quickly.

 

Newark Street Market Opens in Hoboken

On June 17th Hoboken officials and local businesses gathered together to celebrate Hoboken’s new Newark Street plaza. The plaza is part of the safety redesign project taking place between Washington and Hudson Street, which includes making the space more pedestrian friendly by planting trees and providing bistro tables and chairs, and Adirondack chairs. The projects also includes a widened sidewalk and a restoration of the cobblestone roadway.

Nest Seekers International, a full-service real estate brokerage firm with offices in major cities across the country, has opened up offices in Jersey City and Hoboken. Nest Seekers describes themselves as a “full service global real estate brokerage and marketing firm leading the industry in New York City, the Hamptons, Miami, Beverly Hills, and internationally.” They offer sales, marketing and management of real estate.  Their expansion to NJ is a result of the demand for high-end real estate on this side of the Hudson and they seek to market new development projects in the area with more details becoming available in the coming months.
