It was a week full of sunshine and cool temperatures with fall just a few days away. There is a lot of news happening in Hoboken and Jersey City. It has been another week of news in Hudson County, and we’ve got all the headlines to get you caught up, as we do every week — from all around the internet. Hoboken’s Fall Arts + Music Festival Entertainment Lineup Announced

Hoboken Arts + Music Festival 2021

One of the Mile Square’s most anticipated fall events is returning this September. The City of Hoboken recently announced that the annual Fall Arts + Music Festival will take place on Sunday, September 29th along Washington Street in Hoboken. From 11AM to 6PM, residents can peruse displays + sales from artists, crafters, food vendors, and local businesses — as well as listen to live music. Law Enforcement Agencies Find Fleeing Man at Morris Canal in Jersey City

A helicopter, two boats, and four law enforcement agencies were involved in extracting a man fleeing from police from the Morris Canal on September 5th. Per the Jersey City Times, the incident took place just east of the Jersey Avenue Bridge. The New Jersey State Park Police, New Jersey Transit Police, Jersey City Police Department, and New York City Police Department responded. After a half-hour standoff, an NYPD officer was able to pull the man onto a police boat. The man, who appeared uninjured, was subsequently transferred to a waiting ambulance.

Hoboken Planning Board Approves 27-Story Rail Yard Building

The Hoboken Planning Board granted final approval for a 27-story rail yard building owned by LCOR and NJ Transit, and also reviewed the 914-930 Monroe Street proposal, which is part of the Western Edge Redevelopment Plan, on September 5th. Per the Hudson County View, the  27-story building is projected to have 386 units, 78 of which, or 20 percent, will be affordable. The Planning Board approved it unanimously 7-0. Then, the Board reviewed the project at 914-930 Monroe, which is part of the Western Edge Redevelopment Plan. Attorney Cameron McLeod, counsel for Monroe Properties LLC, noted that the project seeks to build 674 residential units, approximately 481 parking spaces, and about 50,650 square feet of retail space. The three buildings on the site will also incorporate flood vents to alleviate issues during rain storms.

A longtime Hoboken family business has posted letters asking customers for information while it investigates alleged “embezzlement.” Per Patch Hoboken, Hoboken Glass Company located at 805 Clinton Street, posted letters on its windows recently saying they became aware of fraud against the owners. They are asking customers to review their transactions and let them know if they see anything unusual. The letter says: “Hoboken Glass Company is currently closed pending an ongoing internal investigation into allegations of fraud, forgery, embezzlement, and theft perpetuated against the owner.” Anyone with information can email [email protected] or call 201-687-7100.


13-Story High Rise is Coming to Jersey City’s India Square

A new project at 166 Van Reipen, also known as 96 Tonnelle Avenue, will top out soon, not far from India Square, Mana Contemporary, and Newark Avenue’s western end. Per Jersey Digs, the 13-story mixed-use project has risen most of its 144 feet in the air, as all the concrete floors to the roof have been poured. Of the 196 total units included in the building, 20 will be set aside as affordable housing. Garage parking for nine vehicles will be accessed along the rear of the building, and bicycle parking is included in the project. An estimated completion date for the project has not been announced.

Studio 12 Hair Designers, a hair salon in Hoboken located at 534 Garden Street, announced via Instagram on August 25th that it will continue to serve the community of Hoboken and surrounding areas but now under new management. Its contact number has been changed from 201-798-7090 to 732-904-6331. A grand opening event was held on September 8th to celebrate its rebranding to AYC Salon Studio and welcome new owner Andy.


There’s a New ‘Secret’ Jewish Deli Pop-Up in Jersey City

The hunt for a delicious Jewish deli in Hoboken or Jersey City continues — and while we’ve had some luck here and there (hellloo Hank’s), there’s a new pop-up deli we recently discovered which is helping curb the matzo ball soup cravings as of late. Meet Nana’s Deli, a new secret-ish Jersey City pop-up Jewish deli inside of the newly-revamped Harborside building on the waterfront. It’s being served inside of The District, which is located at 210 Hudson Street, Jersey City, which recently revamped its menu + cocktails (more on that later). Click here for more.


Monroe Street in Hoboken Reopens After Police Activity Concludes on Friday Evening

On the afternoon of September 6th, right around school dismissal near the Monroe Center, police activity was reported as well as a road closure in Hoboken. The area of 9th through 7th on Monroe Street had been taped off with caution tape noted as a crime scene by eyewitnesses, according to police. Residents in the area were told to stay inside in this area due to the active crime scene investigation. Click here for more.

Anna Akbari is the author of the book, “There is No Ethan,” where she details three women’s experiences being catfished by someone posing as a man named Ethan Schuman. Per the Jersey City Times, Anna met Ethan on OkCupid in late 2010 and maintained a digital relationship with him. After noticing inconsistencies in Ethan’s stories, his inability to meet in person or speak over the phone, and his manipulative and cruel treatment, Akbari questioned his authenticity. She eventually came into contact with two other women who had almost identical experiences with Ethan. After several months of sleuthing, they were able to discover the identity of the ‘real Ethan’: Dr. Emily Marantz (formerly Slutsky). Despite this revelation and confirmation from Dr. Marantz herself that she was Ethan, she has not received any known formal consequences for conning these, and many other, women.


North Bergen Housing Authority Executive Director Resigns For Health Reasons

North Bergen Housing Authority (NBHA) Executive Director Gerald Sanzari resigned on September 6th “due to personal health reasons,” spokesman Nick Bond said following an inquiry asking if Sanzari resigned due to a pending law enforcement investigation. Per the Hudson County View, the housing authority is not aware of any active law enforcement investigation at this time. NBHA will be appointing an interim executive director in the near future and its staff is working to ensure that all services and functions continue to be fulfilled during the transition.

Jersey City’s fifth annual Bergen Square Day was celebrated on September 14th from 12PM-6PM at the intersection of Bergen Avenue and Academy Street. The revitalized pedestrian space that officials cut the ribbon on in July includes a new plaza, traffic safety upgrades, and greenery. Bergen Square Day is a celebration of the diverse culture and history of Jersey City and featured activities and performances for all ages, including live bands, a deejay, dancing, tours of local historic sites, local food, and merchant vendors. Jersey City Mayor Fulop Cuts Ribbon on Two New Buildings in Bergen-Lafayette

On September 12th Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop cut a ceremonial ribbon to welcome two new residential properties to the emerging Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood. Per a Cahn PR press release, the properties, Atlas and Starling, are two luxury rentals from development partners Alpine Residential and Fields Grade. The celebration was held at Atlas, a 24-story high-rise rental property located at 270 Johnston Street, the tallest building in Bergen-Lafayette. Starling, is a boutique collection of 39 luxury apartment residences at 69 Monitor Street.

Jersey City Mayor Fulop Opens $6M Training Facility for Police De-Escalation Training

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, City Council members, and the Department of Public Safety officially opened the doors to Jersey City’s new $6 million Public Safety De-Escalation and Training Center on September 10th. The City of Jersey City made the announcement via Instagram and shared some of the facility’s state-of-the-art components in a tour recap video. Equipped with cutting-edge simulation technology and immersive scenarios, emergency responders from Jersey City and other police and fire departments throughout New Jersey will receive comprehensive instruction on conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and de-escalation techniques using real-time simulations based on the participants’ reactions.

A local non-profit that supports families who have children with heart complications will be hosting an event this September to give back to the community. Kaia’s KindHearts was founded when Hoboken resident Leigh Cole and her husband started a fundraiser to help support other children with similar heart diagnoses as their daughter Kaia, who has dextrocardia — and as of earlier this year, it’s officially a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. In honor of World Heart Day on September 29th, Kaia’s KindHearts Foundation will be hosting a packing party at Schmitty’s in Hoboken, where attendees can put together care packages to donate to local hospitals’ cardiac ICUs — or you can donate items for the care packages beforehand. $147 Million Budget With 3.4% Tax Increase Approved by Hoboken City Council

After months of debating, Hoboken’s City Council has finally agreed on a $147 million budget with a 3.4% tax increase. Per the Hudson Reporter, it took over four months to reach this point, with many council members still unsure about some parts of the budget, but they agreed it was time to move on and make a decision. During the meeting, Councilman-at-Large Jim Doyle, who had been leading it since Council President Jen Giattino had attended over the phone, admitted he wasn’t entirely sure what they were voting on. When it came time to vote, the amendment for health insurance passed with a 6-3 vote. Councilmembers Cohen, Fisher, Ramos, Giattino, Doyle, and Jabbour voted yes, while Councilmembers Presinzano, Russo, and Quintero voted against it.

The Jersey City Oddities Market is coming back on October 13th, transforming The Historic Harsimus Cemetery, located at 435 Newark Avenue, into a one-of-a-kind spectacle. The event features everything from handcrafted ghost sculptures and taxidermy to ethically sourced bone art and vintage curios. Three Men Charged for Selling Drugs in Secaucus

Three men were charged for dealing drugs in Secaucus after a narcotics investigation. Per NJ.com, more than 150 grams of cocaine and approximately 20 grams of MDMA, or ecstasy, were recovered by the prosecutor’s office’s Narcotics Task Force. Nelson Villegas-Rios, 33, of Lyndhurst, and Sebastian Ospina Osorio, 34, of New York, were arrested on Plaza Drive in Secaucus, which runs through the Harmon Meadow shopping area on August 7th. As part of the ongoing investigation, the Port Authority Police Department arrested Larry Brito Marin, 27, of Lodi, at Kennedy International Airport on September 3rd.


Jersey City Council May Limit Cannabis Dispensaries After Year-Long Moratorium

The Jersey City Council may limit cannabis retail licenses in its six wards after a year-long moratorium on approving new businesses. Per NJ.com, placing a cap on the number of dispensaries would alleviate the fear that the City’s cannabis market would quickly become oversaturated if left unrestrained. Without agreeing on a number, the council enacted a six-month moratorium last April that has been extended four times. The moratorium is currently set to end in October.


Jersey City Jeweler Pleads Guilty to Fraudulent Tax Evasion Scheme

A jeweler from Jersey City with businesses in New York City’s Diamond District has pleaded guilty to spearheading a scheme to illegally evade customs duties for millions of dollars of jewelry imports into the United States. Per the Hudson County View, Monishkumar Kirankumar Doshi Shah, aka “Monish Doshi Shah, 39, of Mumbai, India, and Jersey City, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Esther Salas to information charging him with one count each of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and operating and aiding and abetting the operation of an unlicensed money transmitting business. As part of his plea agreement, Shah agreed to pay restitution to CBP in the amount of $742,500 for the wire fraud scheme and forfeiture in the amount of $11.13 million for the wire fraud and unlicensed money transmitting schemes. His sentencing is scheduled for January 23rd, 2025.


Hoboken High School Student is Named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist

Each year, high-achieving students in New Jersey high schools compete for a college National Merit Scholarship of $2,000 per year or more. The program creates a list of thousands of students nationwide who scored well on the PSAT during their junior years. Per Patch Hoboken, on September 11th, the National Merit Scholarship Board released its new list of 2025 semifinalists. Among them, Hoboken High School has one semifinalist: Madison Walia Peters. She will now undergo a very competitive application process to try to become a finalist and a scholarship winner. The winners are normally announced in May.


 Jersey City Army Recruiter Charged with Bank Fraud + Aggravated Identity Theft

A U.S. Army recruiter from Jersey City has been charged with bank fraud and aggravated identity theft for using her position to defraud her recruits. Per the Hudson County View, Jane Crosby, 33, of Jersey City, is charged by complaint with one count of bank fraud and seven counts of aggravated identity theft. She appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Leda Dunn Wettre in Newark federal court on September 11th and was released on a $100,000 unsecured bond. From September 12th, 2023, to December 27th, 2023, Jane submitted “Pre-Active Duty Membership” bank account applications to a credit union on behalf of seven U.S. Army recruits without their knowledge or consent.

Hoboken’s annual Spaghetti Block Party returned for Mile Square residents to the waterfront walkway on Sintra Drive between First and Second Streets on September 12th. Hoboken Police Arrest Union City Man with Warrants at Sinatra Park

A Union City man was arrested on August 28th after allegedly masturbating in front of people at a Hoboken waterfront park. Per Patch Hoboken, Jose Vasquez, 35, was charged with three counts of criminal sexual contact. At police headquarters,”he continued his illegal behavior in front of officers.” Jose had an open warrant from Hoboken for possession of controlled dangerous substances and possession of drug paraphernalia, and two warrants from Union City. He was taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility. 


Restriction on Plastics at Restaurants is Unanimously Approved by Jersey City Council

The Jersey City City Council unanimously approved an amended ordinance removing plastic straws and stirrers from restaurants’ self-service stands. Per NJ.com, the ordinance requires businesses to only supply them to customers by request. With over 40 billion single-use plastic utensils discarded annually in the U.S., this ordinance not only reduces our environmental impact but also has economic benefits for small businesses.


Second Man Charged In Brutal Killing of Jersey City Teacher + Mother of Three

A second man has been charged in the brutal killing of a former Jersey City teacher and mother of three. Per Patch Jersey City, Leiner Miranda Lopez, 38, of Jersey City, was extradited to the United States on September 11th from Colombia on charges of murder, desecrating human remains, and other offenses after being arrested in 2023. Leiner and co-defendant Cesar Santana, 38, of Jersey City, described last year as the victim’s estranged husband, were both indicted by a Grand Jury on May 15th, 2023. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head and compressions to the neck and the manner of death to be homicide. This matter is being investigated as an act of domestic violence.

A former NBA star with Jersey roots is the latest business owner to open a cannabis dispensary in Hudson County. Village Hoboken, which is opening next month at 516 Washington Street, is owned by Al Harrington, an Orange native and a 16-season NBA veteran. His company, Viola Brands, has sold its products in other dispensaries in the state, and this new business will sell Viola products. The NBA veteran was spotted at Village Hoboken on Wednesday, May 29th, and we now know that the new cannabis dispensary will make its debut on Washington Street on Saturday, September 21st, following a ribbon cutting on Friday, September 20th. New 9/11 Display to Remain at Bayonne City Hall Through September

Bayonne City Hall has a new 9/11 display, installed by resident Jim Mock who worked as a union carpenter on the clean-up and reconstruction of the World Trade Center site. The display will remain there for the rest of September. Per the Hudson County View, the Bayonne Fire Department held their annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony on September 11th, with Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis, a retired police captain, thanking first responders for their service.


First Street Sundays is Back for 2024 in Hoboken

An initiative that aims to create a vehicle-free, no-parking zone on 1st Street in Hoboken has returned for 2024. First Street Sundays — which kicked off on September 8th and runs through October 27th — will be in effect each Sunday from 10AM-8PM on First Street from Washington Street to Garden Street. The initiative is organized by local Hoboken businesses and gives these locales the chance to improve business, as well as locals the chance to stroll around Hoboken without any vehicular traffic. Jersey City May Adopt New Trash Collection Rules

Businesses, residences with at least 16 units, and any properties using private garbage collectors would be required to either use bins or orange waterproof bags on trash days under a new ordinance sponsored by Councilwoman Mira Prinz-Arey. Per NJ.com, under the proposed regulations, bins would need secure lids. If opting for the orange bags, they must be strong enough to not leak or tear, the ordinance says.


Updates on the Paris Art Museum Coming to Jersey City

Jersey City will be partnering with Centre Pompidou of Paris, France to bring about the Centre Pompidou x Jersey City Museum which will be located in Journal Square. This will be Centre Pompidou’s first North American partnership — and they have picked no better place than the city of Jersey City to create this international destination for the arts. The museum was slated to open in 2024, but was delayed until 2026 back in April. Centre Pompidou also hosted a ‘Night of Ideas’ event in Jersey City this March that included exhibitions, debates, panels, screenings, performances, and workshops. NJEDA pulled its support of the project in June 2024 — saying it was “no longer feasible” — but Jersey City Mayor Stephen Fulop has since said that the project can still move forward without the financial support of the NJEDA. A new proposal for the project was shared at the City Council meeting on Wednesday, September 11th, which includes a 30-year tax break for the project that was passed on its first reading. Reservoir #3 Reopening in Jersey City Heights Next Week

Jersey City’s Reservoir #3 has been the subject of much discussion and consternation among neighbors and community leaders. The reservoir dates back to the 1870s and is listed on the state and national Register of Historic Places. But this piece of beauty and history started decaying in the late 1990s. In 2021, Jersey City leaders committed to restoring the reservoir and the surrounding park. Now, following comprehensive restoration to the site, the reservoir is officially reopening on Tuesday, September 17th. Click here for more.


City of Hoboken Requests Resident Feedback on New Skatepark for Maritime Park

The City of Hoboken has released a survey and scheduled a public meeting for residents to provide input on a new skatepark as part of their Maritime Park project, which initially came with a $74.5 million price tag. Click here to take the online survey, which will close on September 30th, at 6PM. Per the Hudson County View, residents are invited to attend a Maritime Park Skatepark Meet-up at the Castle Point Skatepark along Sinatra Drive near Eighth Street, on September 17th at 5PM. City staff and members of the city’s skatepark design team from SCAPE Studios and Action Sports Design will be in attendance to listen to the community’s preferences specifically for the skatepark design and encourage participation in the skatepark online survey. A community meeting to discuss the proposed plans for the entirety of Phase 1 of Maritime Park will be held later this fall.

The Jersey City Night Market is coming back to Journal Square on September 21st and October 19th from 2PM-8PM. The events will take place at Magnolia Landing next to the Journal Square PATH Station and feature gourmet food vendors and food trucks, handcrafted goods from local artisans, and music. Live DJ performances, dancing, seasonal activities, and a few surprises will round out an exciting evening for all ages.
