Exclusive: Jersey City’s Golden Cicada to Close in November

After three years in business at the corner of Grand Street and Marin Boulevard, Jersey City bar The Golden Cicada has announced its closure. The Golden Cicada originally opened in the 1980s at 195 Grand Street, closed in 2019, and enjoyed a second chapter that began in fall 2021. Now, The Hoboken Girl can exclusively share that the bar and lounge will permanently close in November 2024. Click here for more.


Where to Vote in Hoboken for Upcoming Elections

Election Day 2024 is on Tuesday, November 5th from 6AM to 8PM. Residents have the chance to vote early for the upcoming November 5th election from Saturday, October 26th to Sunday, November 3rd at Hoboken City Hall, located at 94 Washington Street. The City noted ahead of the November 2023 election that some polling locations have changed. Joining Hoboken’s ever-growing beauty scene is a new cosmetic tattoo studio called Reprisal. Soft open now at 95 River Street, the studio specializes in various cosmetic treatments, including powder brows, lip blush, eyeliner, and restorative services (areola restoration, stretch mark revisions, scar camouflage). The Other Side Dispensary Celebrates Grand Opening in Jersey City Heights

Jersey City entrepreneur Alyza Brevard-Rodriguez opened the doors to her latest venture on October 12th. Since 2022, Alyza and her team have been working to open The Other Side Dispensary (TOSD) at 36 Congress Street in Jersey City Heights. There’s a New Social Club for Kids + Parents Coming to Hoboken

A new kid-friendly social space for both kids and their parents is coming to the Mile Square. The Bunny Hive will make its debut later this fall at 1001 Bloomfield Street, the former home of Field Colony. The new spot looks to nurture the bond between little ones and their grown-ups while providing opportunities for relationship-building and socialization with others. Click here for more.


City of Hoboken Receives $1M Grant For Planting of Trees

Mayor Ravi Bhalla and the City of Hoboken announced on October 9th that the city will create a Division of Urban Forestry in 2025 following the award of a $1 million grant. Per the Hudson County View, this funding will also support a comprehensive five-year urban forestry project aimed at expanding and maintaining Hoboken’s tree canopy, enhancing stormwater management, and mitigating climate change.


Signage Spotted for Paulus Hook Brick Oven Pizza

Signage spotted by an HG reader in the former Speedy’s location indicates that Paulus Hook Brick Oven Pizza could be making a Jersey City comeback. The pizzeria closed at its original 84½ Morris Street location in 2020, but before that, was popular for its Neapolitan-style pizzas. Now, there’s “coming soon” signage at 134 Chestnut Avenue, per the HG reader.  The Hoboken Girl has reached out to the team and will update this story as details unfold.


Franklin Social + Junto Attic Bar Reopening This Month in Jersey City After Fire

The Junto Attic Bar is nestled above Franklin Social and tucked away up a staircase at 68 Mercer Street in Jersey City. These two local favorites were forced to temporarily close for repairs earlier this year due to a fire — but we recently received word that the spots will be reopening this month. Journal Square Urby is Now Leasing in Jersey City

Journal Square Urby Expands to Jersey City with a 25-story tower offering 317 new apartments, a rooftop pool, a fitness center, coworking spaces, a dog park, and a lobby café. The tower is located at 532 Summit Avenue, directly across from the Journal Square PATH station, and is now welcoming residents. Plans for the Hoboken Urby have been approved and work will begin in 2025.


Vein Institute of New Jersey Opens New Hoboken Office

The City of Hoboken is filled with an array of healthcare providers, each specializing in different disciplines to help keep our community in tip-top shape. Vein Institute of New Jersey, an affiliate of The Cardiovascular Care Group, recently opened its new Hoboken office located at 129 Washington Street, 4th Floor in Hoboken. The local practice consists of board-certified vascular surgeons, physician assistants, + advanced nurse practitioners and focuses on comprehensive medical care for vein diseases such as chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, spider veins, and deep vein thrombosis — from serious medical procedures to aesthetics when it comes to veins. Jersey City’s BelovEd Community Charter School Receives Grant for Electric School Buses

Students at BelovED Community Charter School will soon be riding to classes in brand new, zero-emission, electric buses. Per the Jersey City Times, Governor Phil Murphy announced on October 2nd that the Jersey City charter school had been awarded a $1.28 million grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Electric School Bus Grant Program. The grant will enable the school to purchase four electric school buses and two fast-charging stations.

The Thirsty Baker, a small gourmet brownie business in Jersey City, announced via Instagram that it’s shutting down at the end of October. Per the post, “it’s not goodbye, just see you later.” This woman-owned small business run by Emily Hokanson specializes in homemade, small-batch gourmet brownies. The Thirsty Baker is based in Jersey City and the brownies are available at local farmers markets and via local delivery or shipping to the continental US.


Doctor Saves Woman After Collapsing During Jersey City Half Marathon

Chrystal Rinehold, 36, a high school basketball coach at Elizabeth High School in New Jersey, collapsed near the seven-mile mark of the Jersey City Half-Marathon due to a cardiac episode on September 28th. Per NJ.com, Dr. Shane Naidoo, a marathon runner and emergency medicine physician for TeamHealth, saw her fall to the ground on the grass next to the race path and treated her before emergency responders arrived at the scene. The doctor joined the emergency responders to take Chrystal to Jersey City Medical Center less than a mile away and told them what happened. Once she was stable, he returned to complete the race, finishing in 4,059th place in a time of three hours and 53 minutes.


Hoboken Harvest Festival 2024 Taking Place at New Location 10/19

Hoboken residents and visitors are invited to attend this year’s Harvest Festival, which will take place on Saturday, October 19th from 11AM to 5PM at 770 Jackson Street Plaza and Seventh + Jackson Resiliency Park. New Coworking Space, Narra Collective, to Open in Jersey City

Narra Collective, a new family-friendly coworking space in Jersey City, announced via Instagram that its soft launch will take place on October 28th at 333 Washington Street. The coworking space is designed by parents and made for parents, offering flexible workspaces, a family lounge, workshops, and other amenities to support work and family life.

Family of Jersey City Woman Who Died After Drinking Charged Lemonade Settles Lawsuit with Panera

Panera Bread has settled a lawsuit filed by the family of a student from Jersey City with a heart condition who died after drinking the store’s highly caffeinated Charged Lemonade Drink. Per NJ.com, Sarah Katz, 21, of Jersey City, was attending the University of Pennsylvania when she bought the beverage from a Panera store in Philadelphia on Sept. 10, 2022, and died the same day. The case was dismissed with prejudice on October 7th after the parties reached a resolution. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed and attorneys for the student’s parents, Michael and Jill Katz, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.


Hoboken Urby the Latest Addition to Incoming Projects Near Lackawanna Terminal

With a few tweaks along the way, plans for the Hoboken Urby have been approved and work will begin in 2025. The building will be located at 265 Observer Highway, just steps from the Hoboken Terminal. ‘Big Sit’ Birding Event Happened at Liberty State Park on 10/12

The New Jersey Conservation Foundation teamed up with the Feminist Bird Club of Jersey City, Liberty State Park, and Jersey City Birds for a special “Big Sit” birding event on October 12th at Liberty State Park. Per the Jersey City Times, the event was free and open to both novice and experienced birdwatchers. The “Big Sit,” a semi-competitive birding event first created by the New Haven Bird Club in 1992, is designed to encourage a more relaxed approach to birdwatching. Rather than moving from place to place, participants are invited to sit and observe, allowing for more conversation and connection with fellow birders.


Officials Implement Restrictions on Cellphones in Jersey City Schools

Within weeks of implementing new restrictions on cellphone use at two Jersey City schools, Superintendent Norma Fernandez noticed the atmosphere within the schools had shifted. Students weren’t just paying more attention in class, they started spending more time together and acting more like kids. Per the Jersey City Times, the district is piloting two methods of keeping phones away from students during the school day. The programs are going so well that officials want to expand them districtwide.


NJ Transit to Launch NewBus Hudson Project in Hudson County

NJ Transit is launching the NewBus Hudson project, a plan to rethink the bus network in Hudson County. Prioritizing bus service will ensure safe and efficient travel for residents, workers, and visitors. The Hudson County Executive’s Office announced via Instagram that NJ Transit is conducting a survey to collect ideas about current and future bus services in Hudson County. Jersey City Schools Lead-Free Water Fountain Project is Almost Complete

The Jersey City Board of Education is now in the final stages of getting the lead out of the drinking water at its schools. Per the Jersey City Times, following testing this summer of water samples from each of six sites, fountains have been turned on at six more buildings. Guarini Plumbing, of Jersey City, was contracted to handle 12 schools for the 2024-2025 phase for the supply and installation of single and bi-level water fountains at a cost of about $3.1 million.


The Grapevine Coworking Space Opens in Jersey City’s Bergen-Lafayette Neighborhood

Mayor Steven M. Fulop and Jersey City’s Economic Development Corporation (JCEDC) are breaking new ground with the launch of The Grapevine, the first coworking space on the southwest side of the city that also serves as a small business incubator. Per the Jersey City Times, the new collaborative workspace is designed to create opportunities for local entrepreneurs, freelancers, and small business owners, offering a modern and affordable coworking office coupled with business development programs and JCEDC support.

Back in July, Paulus Hook restaurant Bistro La Source announced it would be moving to a new locale on Marin Boulevard in Jersey City. A few months later, we now know what’s coming to the 85 Morris Street space. Meet Perquin: a new Latin American restaurant with Honduran and Ecuadorian roots that will make its debut in Jersey City next month. French American Academy Expands to a New Campus in Jersey City Heights

The French American Academy of Jersey City will offer the first “Candidate” High School International Baccalaureate program in Jersey City as it expands to a new campus in the Heights. Per the Jersey City Times, the school will open its doors for the 2025-2026 school year at 118 Ferry Street, the former location of St. Nicholas Catholic School, after learning about its closure in local media. It will be starting with a cohort of ninth-grade students and expanding one grade every year. Families interested in the new high school can submit an Expression of Interest Form on the school’s website or attend one of its upcoming open house events.

Jersey City Councilman James Solomon’s office is hosting its annual Pumpkin Smash in partnership with Community Compost Co. on November 3rd from 12PM-3PM. Per Councilman Solomon’s Instagram post, the event will take place at 353-361 6th Street parking lot across from The Brunswick School in Jersey City. The Pumpkin Smash is a free event that helps keep pumpkins out of landfills. All of the pumpkins will be processed into compost, which will grow future pumpkins.


Hoboken Man is Arrested for Stealing $2k in Merchandise from Nike Store

A Hoboken man was charged with stealing approximately $2,000 in merchandise from the Nike store located at 222 Washington Street. Per the Hudson County View, Daquan Fletcher, 33, of Hoboken was found shoplifting at the Nike store on September 25th. He was arrested by Hoboken Police and a search incident to arrest located a wax fold. Daquan was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters, where he was found to have a warrant out of Jersey City for theft. He was processed on the shoplifting charge, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia, before being transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

Hoboken Launches Community Survey for World Cup 2026 Celebrations

The City of Hoboken launched an online community survey on October 9th to gather input on potential events and activities the city could host during the FIFA World Cup 2026 tournament scheduled to occur from June 11th-July 19th, 2026 at the New York New Jersey (MetLife) Stadium. Per a City of Hoboken press release, members of the City’s administration recently met with the NY/NJ FIFA Host Committee to showcase Hoboken as a location for tournament festivities that celebrate soccer’s global influence and bring the community together. The Ghost of Uncle Joe’s Returns to Historic Harsimus Cemetery on 10/18 + 10/19

The Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery on 435 Newark Avenue will host the annual The Ghost of Uncle Joe’s on Friday, October 18th from 6PM to 10PM and Saturday, October 19th from 1PM to 10PM. This event is a Halloween masquerade fundraising ball to benefit the preservation of the site. This event will feature performances from local musicians and serve food from food trucks local to Jersey City. Click here for more.
