Many new businesses have come to town and some long-time businesses have officially closed for the week of August 18, 2024 — lots of news happening in Hoboken and Jersey City. It has been another week of news in Hudson County, and we’ve got all the headlines to get you caught up, as we do every week — from all around the internet.

gtk Closing Original Jersey City Location, New Bergen-Lafayette Spot Underway
A popular local eatery known for its creative and customizable takeout options is officially closing its original location at 356 Varick Street in Jersey City. After more than five years of serving the community from this spot, gtk is bidding farewell to its founding home. While the closure marks the end of an era for the business, there’s a lot more on the horizon including a new location in Jersey City and a name update. Updates on Body Found at Hoboken’s Maxwell Park
In the early hours of August 15th, a body was found at Maxwell Park in Hoboken. In an August 16th newsletter to constituents, Hoboken Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher shared the following information: “I completely understand how frustrating it is to have so few answers in situations like this. I want you to know that the HCPO and HPD are fully engaged and working around the clock to get answers. If you, or anyone you know, witnessed anything related to the deceased before Hoboken Police arrived or have any other information you feel may be relevant, please reach out to HCPO Sergeant Ken Sheehan at 201-705-4161 who is leading the investigation. Cuban Pete’s Opening in Former Charrito’s Space in Hoboken This Fall
Charrito’s, which closed its last remaining Hoboken location in August 2023, left residents to wonder what would succeed the popular taqueria. Cuban Pete’s, a BYOB Cuban restaurant in Montclair, New Jersey, is moving into the former Charrito’s space at 518 Washington Street. The new spot looked like it was taking steps towards opening back in April, with new signage in the windows that displays “Coming Soon Summer 2024” — and we now know that the restaurant is looking to open up in the Mile Square this fall, despite signs being down again. Buffalo Wild Wings To Open First Outpost in Jersey City

Per Jersey Digs, the outpost has already put up temporary signage outside 2825 Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City. Buffalo Wild Wings has not secured a liquor license for the property. The outpost will fall under the company’s fairly new “Go” brand, which focuses on a delivery and pick-up model instead of a full-fledged sports bar concept for which it is best known. An official opening date has not yet been announced, but a Google listing of the business says it aims for a September launch.
Police Share Images of Man Who Allegedly Groped Women in Hoboken

Photos of a delivery man accused of groping at least three women on the same day last month were released by Hoboken police. Per NJ.com, the public outing has failed to yield an arrest although a handful of residents said on social media platforms they spotted the alleged groper over the weekend at various locations in Hoboken. Authorities say the incidents occurred on sidewalks near the intersections of Second and Garden Streets, Garden and First Streets, and Willow Avenue and Seventh Street, all between 1:40PM and 2:45PM on July 30th.
Hoboken Business Alliance Announces New Bistro Lighting on Washington Street is Complete

The Hoboken Business Alliance (HBA), a Special Improvement District created by the Hoboken City Council, announced via Instagram the completion of the new bistro lighting installation along Washington Street. In partnership with Mayor Bhalla, the Hoboken City Council and PSE&G, this lighting upgrade of 4,750 bulbs over 15 blocks from Newark to 15th Street provides a welcoming ambiance by lighting up the commercial corridor connecting uptown and downtown Hoboken.
Is Sri Thai in Hoboken Closed?
Locals have been wondering if Sri Thai, located at 234 Bloomfield Street in Hoboken, has closed its doors for good after noticing that the spot has been frequently closed for a few weeks now. The Hoboken Girl has not received confirmation of an official closure, a member of the Hoboken Mommies Facebook group saw that the restaurant was boarded up on Friday, August 9th, 2024. Further inspection by The Hoboken Girl team has revealed the same, and continues to be the case as of Sunday, August 18, 2024. Click here for more.
The Jersey City LGBTQ+ Pride Festival is Happening Next Week
Hudson County celebrates Pride Month in August — and it’s also when the Jersey City LGBTQ+ Pride Festival takes place. Each August, Jersey City hosts a variety of events, including the festival, to celebrate the Hudson County LGBTQ+ community. This year, the Jersey City Pride Festival will take place on Saturday, August 24th at the Grove Street PATH Plaza and Newark Avenue between Grove Street and Jersey Avenue. Click here for more.
Small Fire Causes Evacuation at Jersey City’s Newport Centre Mall This Past Week
On August 13th, the Newport Centre Mall (30 Mall Drive W) in Jersey City was briefly evacuated due to a small fire at Toy Chest, a toy store on the mall’s first floor. Per NJ.com, a fire was reported at Toy Chest just after 12:30PM. Jersey City spokeswoman, Kimberly Wallace-Scalcion shared the following updates with The Hoboken Girl: “Upon arrival, JCFD observed a small working fire in the toy store. The fire caused moderate smoke conditions inside the mall. The sprinkler system went off and helped contain the fire. Additionally, the fire department’s quick response kept the fire under control without any fire extension to any other stores. What’s Going on With the Barriers on the Hoboken Waterfront?

Back in June, a sinkhole opened up on Sinatra Drive in Hoboken. Since the 4th of July was only a few short weeks away at this time (and the City was gearing up for the first Macy’s fireworks on the Hudson County side of the Hudson River in 10 years), barricades were put up along certain areas of the waterfront as a precaution suggested by engineers. New Eye Care Office to Open in Hoboken
A longtime eye doctor’s office in Hoboken is about to be replaced by a new eye care office. Per Patch Hoboken, Family Eye Care of Hoboken placed new signs in the windows of 1126 Washington Street last week. Dr. Claudio D’Alberti had his practice there until he retired over a year ago.
High Rise Set to Take Over Former Pet Resort Lot in Jersey City Gets Taller
Tweaks have been made to the previously approved site plan for a future high rise at the former Jersey City Unleashed Pet Resort and Spa site. Per the Jersey City Times, the Planning Board voted unanimously on August 6th to permit Hany Ahmed, a Hoboken developer with Pegasus Partners, to construct the building slightly taller and with a few more stories than had been previously granted at the site consisting of 173-183 16th Street, 180 15th Street, and 619 Marin Boulevard. The new plan has three more stories because of a decision to replace the automated parking system with a standard garage.
Hoboken High School Ninth Graders Win NJ STEAM Competition
Hoboken High School achieved victory with its ninth-grade student team in the New Jersey STEAM Tank Competition State Finals for the High School Division. Per NJ.com, the team, which consisted of Vivian Allen, Benjamin Gabriel, Olivia Gallo, Jai Malik, and Simon Sandonato, alongside their faculty advisor, Jose Manuel Fernandez, demonstrated ingenuity and skill, allowing them to claim the state championship title while competing against teams from across New Jersey comprised of students ranging from ninth through 12th grades.
West New York Man Charged With Kidnapping and Sexual Assault of Woman
A 40-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in West New York on July 27th. Per Patch Hoboken, the victim told authorities that she had encountered an unknown man sometime around 1:30AM in the area of Hudson Avenue and 51st Street. The female reported the man later grabbed her by the hair and sexually assaulted her. Two weeks later, US Marshals captured a suspect. Ruiz Castro, of West New York, was arrested by US Marshals in Hackensack on August 9th and charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual contact, and simple assault.
PATH Performs! Provides Platform for Local Talent in Journal Square
PATH Performs! is a partnership with the Hudson County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs that helps bring a vibrant experience to everyday commutes by featuring local bands, solo musicians, and spoken-word artists. Per Port Authority NY NJ, performers are set to be staged at Journal Square and Harrison stations two to three times per week through October.
Hoboken Traffic and Parking to be Affected as Streets
Undergo Construction
Various road and infrastructure projects have tied up traffic in Hoboken and affected parking this summer. According to Hoboken’s construction website, there will be road work and Rebuild by Design anti-flooding work at both ends of town, and by the river. Per Patch Hoboken, the county repaving project of Park Avenue was supposed to be finished by the middle of the month, but there are delays due to storm drains ‘accidentally’ being paved over recently. New Pool Hall, Crazy Cues, Opens in Jersey City

Crazy Cues, a new pool hall, is officially open for business in Jersey City along a freshly revitalized stretch of retail, giving residents a new recreational option. Per Jersey Digs, the pool hall is located at 872 Bergen Avenue and recently held its grand opening with Mayor Steven Fulop in attendance. The facility also sports several ping pong tables and a cozy lounge space, although the pool hall does not appear to have a liquor license. Crazy Cues are currently open Sunday through Thursday from 2PM-2AM, staying open an extra hour until 3AM on Friday and Saturday nights.
NJCU Establishes Help Line for Students and Staff Following Ransomware Attack

New Jersey City University recently acknowledged a massive data breach that could affect thousands of people. Per NJ.com, nine days after much of that sensitive information was posted on the dark web, the school has established a help line for possible victims. Cyberscout, a division of the credit reporting bureau Transunion, is staffing a toll-free line, (833) 531-1135, for calls from students, staff and others whose personal and financial information was stolen in early June by the ransomware hacker Rhysida.
$313.2M in Funding Secured by 1800 Avenue at Port Imperial
1800 Avenue at Port Imperial in Weehawken has secured $313.2 million, with construction expected to be completed by the summer of 2026. Per the Hudson County View, the 1800 Avenue project, designed by Handel Architects, will offer 282 luxury residential units for sale. The development will include 45,000 square feet of amenities such as a lounge, spa, fitness center, half-basketball court, multi-media room, kids’ room, game room, library, and co-working space. Outdoor amenities will include a pool, dining and kitchen stations, a sun deck, a fire pit, and lounge seating.
City of Hoboken to Invest in Public School Districts Through Trust
Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and the City of Hoboken announced on August 13th via a press release the administration’s intent to invest over $500,000 annually into the city’s four public school districts: Hoboken Public School District, Hoboken Charter School, Elysian Charter School, and Hoboken Dual Language Charter School. Pending Hoboken City Council approval, the City will establish four trusts to allocate a portion of the funding made available through payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) agreements with the developers of 770 House and the Hoboken Connect project to support the city’s public education system.

Gabriel Villanueva knew the Roberto Clemente RBI softball team he coaches had the potential to win another regional crown. Per NJ.com, even so, the dominant performance Roberto Clemente RBI put forth during the Northeast Regional Tournament took even its head coach by surprise. Jersey City Councilman James Solomon shared a post via Instagram congratulating the team for making it to the RBI Softball World Series.
Hoboken-Based Non-Profit Hosting Hospital Care Package Event for Local Families

A local non-profit that supports families who have children with heart complications will be hosting an event this September to give back to the community. Kaia’s KindHearts was founded when Hoboken resident Leigh Cole and her husband started a fundraiser to help support other children with similar heart diagnoses as their daughter Kaia, who has dextrocardia — and as of earlier this year, it’s officially a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. In honor of World Heart Day on September 29th, Kaia’s KindHearts Foundation will be hosting a packing party at Schmitty’s in Hoboken, where attendees can put together care packages to donate to local hospitals’ cardiac ICUs — or you can donate items for the care packages beforehand. County Executive Craig Guy Celebrates Puerto Rican Culture with Annual Flag Raising Ceremony

County Executive Craig Guy commemorated Puerto Rican culture and history with the annual Hudson County Puerto Rican Flag Raising Ceremony at the Historic Brennan Courthouse. Per a County of Hudson press release, the County Executive was joined by Congressman Rob Menendez (N.J.-08), and President of the Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Art and Culture (JCPRHAC), Melissa Sarmiento. The JCPRHAC will be hosting its 64th Annual Jersey City Puerto Rican Day Parade on Sunday, August 18th.
NJ Transit Will Be FREE for a Week in New Jersey
NJ Transit has had its fair share of bumps in the literal road this year, including a 15% price increase, frequent delays, and many frustrated commuters. But on August 15th, 2024, Governor Phil Murphy announced that NJ Transit will offer a fare holiday from August 26th through September 2nd, making all fares FREE on buses, trains, and light rails. This was done, he shared publicly, as a gesture of appreciation to commuters after a challenging summer marked by service disruptions. And no, this isn’t an April Fool’s joke — NJ Transit really will be free for a week at the end of August throughout the state of New Jersey. Click here for more.
West New York Man Charged with Insurance Fraud
A 31-year-old West New York man was charged with insurance fraud after altering police reports to support his false claim that his vehicle was insured during a crash last June. Per the Hudson County View, Anthony Ayala, 31, of West New York, is charged with insurance fraud, two counts of forgery, and two counts of tampering with public records. He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Jersey City on August 8th and released pending his first court appearance, tentatively scheduled for August 20th.
New $35M Recreation and Middle School Plan is Coming to West New York
The Town of West New York has unveiled a new $35 million recreation and middle school plan, a private-public partnership that comes with 400 parking spaces. Per the Hudson County View, the proposed facility would be located next to Miller Stadium and Miller Park and would result in 6.2 acres of space dedicated to recreation in the center of town. The recreation center will include amenities such as an indoor competitive pool, a multi-purpose court (stripped for basketball and volleyball), an indoor soccer field, pickleball courts, and more. The plan will be paid for with federal, state, private, and already allocated municipal funds, and therefore, the proposal does not require any additional taxpayer funds.
Hoboken Employee Fired for Showing Up at City Hall While Suffering from COVID-19
A longtime Hoboken employee who showed up at City Hall while out sick with COVID-19 during the early days of the pandemic will not be getting her job back, an appellate court panel ruled on August 13th. Per NJ.com, Lisa Sanes, a keyboarding clerk in the city’s Department of Administration, had appealed a Civil Service Commission (CSC) decision that upheld her termination on June 29th, 2020 for insubordination and conduct unbecoming of a public employee. Like the CSC judge, the appellate court panel found no fault with the Office of Administrative Law (OAL) judge’s earlier findings.
Hoboken Officials Looking to Fix Paved-Over Drainage Pipes
The County of Hudson indicates it is focused on addressing issues raised by individual property owners, rather than taking a more comprehensive approach, as requested by Mayor Bhalla last week. Per News12 New Jersey, city officials in Hoboken are still wondering what the next step will be when it comes to the paved-over drainage pipes. The administration, led by Mayor Ravi Bhalla, remains concerned about the approach county officials will take moving forward. If these issues are not quickly addressed, future substantial rainfall will result in significant negative impacts in areas not typically prone to flooding.
‘The Heap’ Puppet is Set to Return to Hoboken

The puppet, known as The Heap, is the brainchild of Hoboken artist Paul Andrejco and is set to return to Hoboken streets soon. As per TAPinto Hoboken, on September 22nd, Paul will wear The Heap costume and march from the Monroe Center, all the way to Hoboken Museum, walking over a mile and stopping at various businesses along the way such as Bwe, Black Rail Coffee, The Hive, and others. His walk will begin at 2PM. The Heap will also be installed at The Hoboken Museum at 1301 Hudson Street on September 24th at an event beginning at 4PM.
Governor Murphy Appoints Jersey City Native To Replace

Governor Phil Murphy will be appointing his former chief of staff, Jersey City native, George Helmy, to serve as a temporary replacement for Bob Menendez, who resigned after being convicted of numerous felonies in a federal corruption trial. Per the New York Times, Helmy also previously served as an aide to New Jersey Senator Cory Booker. Menendez’s resignation is effective August 20th.
