Dedicated HG readers are most likely familiar with our weekly Hoboken Girl of the Week series — but sometimes we love to switch it up and feature local guys that are doing awesome things in our area. So, this week we’re featuring Jamez, Jersey City resident, former Mr. New Jersey, and local stylist, makeup artist, and hairstylist {who just launched his very own cosmetics line!}. Read on to learn more about his inspiring story, what a day in his shoes looks like, and some Hoboken and Jersey City favorites.

About Jamez

Jamez Eli is a brand that encompasses all things glam. I started this brand in 2011 as I was finishing my Fashion Design Degree at the Art Institute of New York City as a makeup artist, hairstylist, and designer that has been in this industry for almost ten years. I wanted to build a beauty empire that makes people feel good and look great. Fashion is not only about looking good, it’s about making a statement, so I decided to use fashion to come out publicly about living with anxiety and started to create fashion with a purpose and just like that the Anxiety Speaks UP movement was born. My Anxiety is The New Normal t-shirt is a way to spark the conversation without any negative stigmas. As an artist, I am always looking for ways to expand my brand and this year I have launched my own cosmetics line with my Jamez Eli Cosmetics. Jamez Eli is a brand that has so many entities, but each and every one of them is a passion of mine that I just want to share with the world. To learn more about the brand or my products and services, check out my new website that I just launched, jamezeli.com, or feel free to reach out to me at imagefeenz@gmail.com.

On What Inspires Him

I would have to say that my parents are my biggest source of inspiration, being a biracial couple and making it through the past thirty-six years despite any obstacle has shown me that no matter what you can do anything that you put your heart into. My dreams keep me motivated, and my brain keeps me up at night with new ideas and ways to use the talents I was blessed with to help others find their best selves.

Goals + Passions

My goals for this year are to expand my cosmetics line with upcoming launches, continue to spread the word about anxiety, be a voice for those that aren’t yet comfortable speaking up, and of course to take my brand to new heights.

A Typical Day in the Life {+ the Highs and Lows}

A typical day for me always varies depending on my clients, and also on the season. For example, if its prom season I’m running from client to client doing hair, makeup, and delivering custom gowns making sure every client looks and feels amazing. I like to build my days based on my clients and their glam needs. sometimes I can spend an entire day working on a formula for a new product, or just spend the entire day at my sewing machine. Some days I’m booked back to back with hair and makeup appointments, these are the highs and lows of owning your own business. However, making people feel good is the best reward and I wouldn’t trade any of the controlled chaos.

Highlight of Career {So Far}

Honestly as corny as it may sound, my clients are the highlight of my career there’s nothing like doing hair and makeup on someone and watching their face light up, or seeing someone put on one of my custom pieces and watching the confidence re-enter their body. I have been fortunate to have amazing clients that make me feel like part of their family. This past year I was able to glam two of my past brides for their baby showers, and that to me is so special. I wouldn’t have a successful business without my clients. I have been blessed with so many opportunities that are proof that I am doing what I should be doing.

The past two years I was honored to compete in an international male pageant representing the State of New Jersey, as Mr. Garden State 2017, and Mr. New Jersey 2018 where I got to spread the word about anxiety on an international platform and received a huge outpouring of support that only fueled me to speak up even more! It’s not just for me it’s for ALL of US, each and every person in my anxiety army. The most rewarding part of my job is I am able to be myself and I have built this brand with integrity.

What a Day Off is Like

Days off are pretty rare in this industry, but when it does happen I try to spend every spare minute with family and friends because without them I wouldn’t be me.

Advice to Someone Trying to Pursue the Same Career Path

It’s not going to be easy, you are going to constantly hear NO, but if this is really what your heart wants, fight with every ounce of your soul and your dreams can come true. As a young boy growing up in Jersey City I was told boys don’t make dresses or do hair/makeup, and look at me now, NEVER GIVE UP!
