It’s no secret that celebrities like to make their way through the Mile Square, but it’s especially exciting when our local celebs make appearances on the national stage. Recently, two sets of Hoboken residents have been contestants on both Family Feud and Jeopardy, and if they look familiar it might not just be because you’ve seen them around town. Broadway star, Brad Weinstock appeared on Jeopardy this week, while New York Lottery’s Yolanda Vega was a contestant on Family Feud earlier this month. Read on for more about these local residents’ appearances on Family Feud and Jeopardy

The Vega Family on Family Feud

If you grew up in the area, you’re probably familiar with the name Yolanda Vega – or more accurately, Yolaaaaaaaaaaanda Vega. For 32 years, Yolanda was the face (and voice) of the New York Lottery, charming our living rooms with her vivacious smile and energy. She retired in 2022 and she made her daughters swear they would not throw her a retirement party. They kept their promise, but instead, as they told The Hoboken Girl, they thought of something better.

“Yolanda’s youngest daughter, Rebecca, thought of the idea, filled out the application online, and crossed her fingers hoping the odds would be better than winning the lottery,” the family shared with The Hoboken Girl, and after a successful audition over zoom, the Vega Family was flown out to Atlanta, GA where the show was recorded in June of 2022.

Joining Yolanda and representing the Vega family were her two daughters, Gabriella and Rebecca, Gabriella’s husband, Nick, and Yolanda’s niece, Ana. Even though Yolanda is originally from Brooklyn and is now living in Albany, Gabriella, Nick, and Rebecca all live right here in Hoboken.

The Vegas first appeared on the show on February 2nd and continued to win four days in a row. They competed for the fifth and final time for the grand prize and a new car on Wednesday, February 8th. The Vegas secured the car and walked away with $61,755 total earnings.

Though she is no stranger to the spotlight, the family shared Yolanda’s experience on Family Feud with The Hoboken Girl, “The experience was like nothing I have ever experienced! Being on Oprah was cool, but meeting Steve Harvey was totally amazing.”

Brad Weinstock on Jeopardy

Just this past week, Brad Weinstock of Hoboken was a contestant on Jeopardy. A self-described crossword fiend, Brad competed on February 16th, 2023, and finished in second place with a total of $10,089. He was defeated by returning champion Stephen Webb of Colorado in Final Jeopardy. The prompt was, “In 2010 they introduced the 4-point shot, 35 feet from the basket.” Unfortunately, Brad did not submit the correct response, which would have been “The Harlem Globetrotters.”

Though basketball fun facts may not be Brad’s forte, he is no stranger to cheering fans and flashy lights. Brad has appeared in Broadway’s Aladdin in the role of Omar and also as Issac “Chip” Berkowitz in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
