How EXCEL Got Started

While working closely together at a sports medicine facility in New York City in the late 1980s, EXCEL founders and co-owners Matt Gibble, PT and Gary Flink, PT, MSPT envisioned opening a practice based in New Jersey that would set the standards in orthopedic physical therapy for everyone from school-age children to geriatrics.

In March 1990, EXCEL opened the doors to their Fort Lee office. Since then, they have opened twenty additional offices throughout Bergen, Hudson, Union, Essex, Somerset, Monmouth, and Warren counties, all of which were designed and built on a foundation of excellence in physical therapy.

Meet Amanda + Alethea

Two integral members of the EXCEL team in Hudson County are Jersey City Clinic Director Amanda Cavallo, PT, DPT, and Hoboken physical therapist Alethea Adsitt, PT, DPT. Amanda and Alethea both provide comprehensive orthopedic physical therapy, in addition to treating pediatric conditions like torticollis, and providing pre-and post-natal care related to conditions such as back pain, core instability, and diastasis recti. They also draw on their own athletic backgrounds to provide sport-specific rehabilitation for runners, dancers, and performing artists who come through their doors.

Amanda is an avid runner who grew up competing in AAU Junior Olympic cross country and track and field events. She received All American accolades in her youth and continued to compete throughout high school and college. She loves working with fellow runners to help them reach peak performance — incorporating a variety of treatment techniques including rock tape and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization.

Amanda is co-hosting a running webinar called “Let’s Talk Running Injuries — Tips from the Experts” with Rothman Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Meghan Bishop on Thursday, April 1st at 7PM.

Alethea is a former dancer and choreographer who specializes in treating dancers, performing artists, athletes, and children. She has advanced training in foot and ankle injuries and previously treated Off-Broadway performers and professional dancers in New York City. Additionally, Alethea received the NYC Department of Education’s scholar’s award and treated preschool, school-aged children, and babies to address a host of pediatric conditions. As a mom herself, she has a particular interest in treating pre-and post-natal core instability and injuries, using a Pilates-based, holistic approach.

The Motivation Behind the Work

According to the two women, one of the best aspects of working at Excel Physical Therapy is being able to help patients move beyond physical injuries and live their life without restrictions. EXCEL’s goal is to provide a trusted resource and staff to help improve the lives of the residents of Hoboken and Jersey City, in addition to differentiating themselves from other PT providers with their one-on-one, specialized care.

The Hoboken and Jersey City offices treat all orthopedic conditions but are particularly well-known for providing specialized services to women and children/babies.

“Beyond the physical aspect of helping my patients through the rehab process, I love connecting with people on a one-on-one level and getting to know them better. Even when we’re doing virtual TeleRehab sessions, that human connection is so important,” Amanda told Hoboken Girl. “This area has such unique, infectious energy. We’re surrounded by young professionals and young families – there’s a constant buzz of activity.”

One Size Does Not Fit All

There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all at Excel Physical Therapy. Each patient receives a personalized treatment plan designed to help them meet their own individual goals, whether that’s exercising on a regular basis or simply lifting their child without pain.

“As a mom, I know how nerve-wracking it can be to seek medical care for your child. When I work with pediatric patients, I do my very best to make the child and the parents comfortable, explaining every step along the way,” Alethea told Hoboken Girl.
