It’s July 4th weekend, so you know that means it’s time for stars, stripes, and events happening in our area. Grab some friends and do literally everything from movie screenings to farm fresh dinners this holiday weekend. Get your red, white, and blue swag on and have a blast with the top x things to do in Hoboken and Jersey City this weekend.

 Youth City Challenge Obstacle Race: Saturday, July 29th

 

Hoboken mamas and papas — this one’s for your little ones. Normally a race/obstacle course for adults, Youth City Challenge Race is being geared towards the kiddos this July. {Youth City Challenge Race at Liberty State Park supports The Friends of Liberty State a 501c3 charity founded by Sam Pesin.} This is what participants can expect during the 1.5 mile course located in Liberty State Park, Jersey City: 3 foot walls to climb, a 20 foot cargo net, a police car and taxi cab, military tires, police hurdles, bar crawl sprints, and water jug carry… just to name a few. All finishers will receive a special medal, bananas at the finish line to refuel, and some serious bragging rights.  Everyone will also get to experience some crazy games and fun music at the finish line. Very Young Girls Moving Screening: Thursday, June 29th at 6:30PM

Be a part of an exclusive Red Carpet screening on a very serious {and very important} topic. This Thursday at Mile Square Theatre {1400 Clinton Street}, there will be a screening fundraiser of the documentary Very Young Girls. In 80 minutes, this documentary will explore the ideas of prostitution and sex slavery, right in New York City, giving a candid perspective unlike any other, from the life of Rachel Lloyd, a “former-prostitute-turned-activist” and founder of GEMS {Girls Educational and Mentoring Services}. Attendants of the night can expect a cocktail hour at 6:30PM, and introduction to the documentary at 7:30PM from Rachel herself, followed by a Q&A at 9:00PM. This event is sure to be an eye opening and touching experience. Tickets available here.

Meditated as a Mother: Thursday, June 29th from 8:00PM – 8:30PM

This Thursday at Asana Soul Practice {411 Jefferson Street, Hoboken}, you can be as Meditated as a Mother. This event consists of a 30 minute guided meditation {don’t worry, no meditation experience necessary} followed by tea tastings from Ariele’s Apothecary. Halifax and Harvest Drop: Thursday, June 29th at 6:30PM

Dive right into summer harvest dining with Halifax and Harvest Drop for a night of unforgettable food. This event links Garden State chefs with area farms {talk about fresh food}. Dinner includes a sparkling wine reception to kick off the night at 6:30PM, followed by a four course {salad with produce at its peak, vegetable gazpacho, large format family-style entrees} farm to table sit down dinner experience. Dinner will feature courses by Halifax Executive Chef Seadon Shouse and seasonal sweets by Pastry Chef Stuart Marx. On top of this dinner, guests can expect wine pairings, local produce, and cheese from NJ farms Sugar Maple Jerseys and Rolling Hills. Farm representatives will also be in attendance to talk about their farming habits, produce, and environmental impact and consciousness for local communities. This dinner takes place at Halifax {225 River Street, Hoboken} and you *must* make a reservation by calling (201) 253-2500.

New Jersey Symphony Orchestra: Thursday, June 29th from 7:30PM – 10:00PM

Join this FREE concert at Maxwell Place Park for a night that will be music to your ears, literally. Presented by Mayor Dawn Zimmer and the City of Hoboken, this free park program features music from Beauty and the Beast, Rodeo, Lincoln and a ton more in ‘Road Trip Across the USA’ {a family friendly show}. These summer park performances are an annual tradition showcasing the NJ Symphony Orchestra’s dedication to bringing live, beautiful music to as many people as possible. Since the concert is free and open to everyone, you don’t even have to worry about reserving tickets in advance. However, it is recommend that you bring a lawn chair or blanket so you can be extra comfy while listening to those tunes.

Free Wok To Walk Day: Friday, June 29th from 12:00PM – 2:00 + 5:00 – 8:00PM

Help welcome the famous Wok To Walk to 91 Washington Street in Hoboken this Friday by showing your support in their fundraiser which will support local charity, TRUE Mentors. {FYI-TRUE Mentors​ is Hoboken’s only one-to-one mentoring program whose goal is to discover the potential of children and mentors through trusted relationships. Wok To Walk has several Manhattan locations all of which provide a quick and flexible menu while still serving fresh and nutritious food. Wow, sounds like a win-win to us. The only question regarding this event should be “noodles or rice?”

Silly Chilly Hot Sauce Tasting Event at Vintage on First: Sunday, July 2nd from  4:00PM – 6:00PM

Vintage of First has been given quite the run around these past few months, but they are now reopen and hosting a spicy event. On Sunday, grab a steamy outfit for those hot summer days and join Silly Chilly for a hot sauce tasting. Bring the heat to any Fourth of July BBQ with a killer hot sauce {and with what you’re wearing}.

The NJ State Fair at the Meadowlands: Thursday, June 22nd – Sunday, July 9th

It’s still happening, people. The largest fair in the New York metro area with over 150 rides and attractions, is open again this summer for their 31st season, running for now through July 9th {so you have no excuse not to attend}. The fair is being held at the Meadowlands Fairgrounds, next to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. The fair features free entertainment and special attractions. Check out the full list of rides, food, animal shows, daring thrill shows, and so much more. This is an NJ can’t miss event.
