What is Smartlipo?
Smartlipo is a fat reduction procedure that uses laser technology to target stubborn fat areas. It is a 2-in-1 procedure, as it also tightens the skin during the healing process. The technology was FDA approved in 2007, and Dr. Paul Foundacaro {of Dr. Park Avenue} was one of the first surgeons in New Jersey to purchase it. Smartlipo is often referred to as “laser lipo,” as it uses laser technology to melt fat in stubborn areas. First, the doctor will make tiny punctures to the area, and lidocaine is applied to the skin to numb you and make it as painless as possible. The laser, which uses heat at a very high temperature, is applied to the area, and it melts down the fat cells, permanently destroying them. This heat melts down the fat into a liquid, making it easy to suction through those tiny punctures. Because of this melting approach, there is no need for cutting {which means no scarring, phew}. That same heated laser also stimulates your body’s own collagen production, ultimately helping the skin tighten, so patients don’t have loose skin afterward.
