Columbus Park in Hoboken, located at 9th between Park and Grand, has long been a County park where residents spend their time — including walking dogs, playground time for kids, and movie nights in the summer. But when it comes to park activities, it has recently been discussed that a dog park to be added to the mix at Columbus Park. It was announced by Hoboken City Council Vice President Emily Jabbour this week that there will be a meeting regarding feedback on a potential dog park to be created in Columbus Park. Read on for the details of the upcoming meeting.

This meeting announcement comes after residents had expressed concern about dogs running off-leash throughout the park both to the County and on social media, with others advocating for the creation of a dog park within its bounds.

We reached out to Councilwoman Jabbour for details on the upcoming meeting about feedback on a Columbus Park dog park and how this came about as an upcoming meeting.

“Going back several years ago, the County had rolled out changes/updates to the playground equipment without asking for community feedback,” she explained, which prompted the City Council to ask Commissioner Romano to engage Hoboken residents in the County planning process in a way that is similar to the City planning process.

“For example, there is a local ordinance that requires the City to provide no less than three community meetings as part of the planning process for parks. Knowing that Hoboken residents have come to expect this level of engagement, I have advocated to the County that they provide a similar process with respect to Columbus Park.”

“Recently, Commissioner Romano mentioned that the County has received repeated requests to add a dog run to Columbus Park,” Jabbour continued. “With the above history in mind, I asked him to organize a community meeting for residents to provide feedback on this concept before moving forward.” The meeting was scheduled by the County to create this opportunity.”

While the park is in Hoboken, it is, in fact, a county park — so if residents are interested in having their voices heard, reaching out to the County is the best way to advocate in either direction, or by attending this meeting.

We have reached out to Hudson County Commissioner Romano for comment but have not heard back yet.

The meeting will take place on Monday, April 11 at 6PM at the gazebo in Columbus Park, weather permitting, or the Hoboken High School Cafeteria in case of inclement weather.
